STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State baseball announced the signing of John Urick, a first baseman/left-handed pitcher from Cowley County Community College, to play baseball for the Cowboys in 2002.
Urick is currently in his sophomore year at Cowley and is batting .430 with 17 homers and 63 RBIs, while also sporting a 4-1 record on the mound with a 2.91 ERA. He was a key player in the team's successful run to the National Junior College World Series in 2001 when he batted .385 with nine round-trippers and 41 RBIs.
"John is one of the best junior college hitters in the country and we are excited that he has chosen to become a Cowboy," said assistant coach Josh Holliday. "He comes from an outstanding junior college program and has a great attitude and work ethic."
The Blue Springs, Mo., product was a first team all-state selection in 2000 at Blue Springs High in baseball. He earned three letters on the diamond and was a forward on the basketball team and a quarterback on the football squad. He is the grandson of former major league manager and executive Whitey Herzog.
Urick was drafted in the 19th round of the 2001 amateur baseball draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers and chose Oklahoma State over Arkansas, Alabama and Michigan.
