Guerrero Captures Title at 2002 U.S. Open

Former Cowboy wrestler Eric Guerrero completed his quest for the 2002 U.S. Open title after defeating Eric Akin, 4-0, Saturday in Las Vegas, Nev.
Guerrero and Jamill Kelly each made the finals after sweeping through their weight classes. Guerrero defated fifth-seeded Mike Mena, 5-0, in the semifinals to reach the final bout.
"Wins are always good," Guerrero said. "I'm glad to win tonight, but I want to do more and do different things. I'm looking for a combination of old and new."
In the finals, Guerrero scored an early takedown in the first period to take a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. He then recorded two takedowns and an ankle lace to record the 4-0 victory and claim the title.
"I want to get better and build on what I have now," Guerrero said. "I'm glad to get the victory and I'm looking forward to the Trials and everything after that."
Kelly defeated Chris Bono, the second seed, in the semifinals before falling to top-seeded Bill Zadick, 4-0, to claim second. Mark Mu?oz recorded seventh after defeating Jon Trenge by inury default.
The Cowboys will send six wrestlers to the University Nationals on May 2-5 in Evanston, Ill.
