Nebraska Shuts Down Oklahoma State 5-2
April 19, 2002 | Cowboy Baseball
The win extended the Huskers win streak over OSU to seven games dating back to the 2000 season and moved their record to 25-13 overall and 11-8 in Big 12 play. The Cowboys 12-game home winning streak ended as they fell to 28-10 overall and 7-5 in conference action.
Pinch hitter Adam Riddle opened the eighth with a walk off of reliever Shane Hawk and moved to second on a single by Will Bolt. Catcher John Grose then knocked a RBI single to right to give the Huskers a 3-2 lead. Third baseman Brandon Eymann then sacrifice bunted the runners over before Jeff Leise walked to load the bases. Leftfielder Daniel Bruce then singled off of reliever Justin Meccage's foot, scoring Will Bolt from third. Designated hitter Jed Morris made it 5-2 with a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Nebraska got on the board first, scoring a run in the second inning on a RBI single by centerfielder Jeff Leise. Oklahoma State tied the game in the bottom of the third when Jose Virgil scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Mitch Mitchell.
The Huskers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Will Bolt scored on a sacrifice fly by leftfielder Daniel Bruce. OSU tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth when catcher Jason Jaramillo came through with a two-out RBI double to left, scoring Nebasett Brown from second base.
Nebraska starter Aaron Marsden moved to 4-1 on the year with the win while reliever Shane Hawk took the loss for the Pokes to drop to 3-4 on the year.
Marsden scattered nine hits over eight innings of work and gave up two runs while walking five and striking out six.
"From the left side, I know he had a real bad arm angle, it was way down on the side and it looked like it was going to hit you on the back," said second baseman Nebasett Brown. "I didn't see a special pitch, a strikeout pitch. I know for me, I was fishing. But he was just a good lefty getting the job done. We were thinking that, especially in that last inning. We tried to jump on him, but I don't know what to say."
"He's one of those left-handers who had three angles, he had great movement. He threw the ball around the zone and made us make outs," said head coach Tom Holliday.
"There's two games left. There's not going to be an overreaction to the first game. The bottom line is, we didn't get it done at home. And we had our chances right down to the last inning. Weatherman permitting, I'll be here tomorrow," added Holliday.
Catcher Jason Jaramillo led Oklahoma State offensively with a 3-for-4 day at the plate while outfielders Jose Virgil and Daylon Monette each had two hits as well.
The game was delayed one hour and 15 minutes due to rain and started at 4:15 p.m.
The teams will play game two of the series tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Sophomore Scott Baker is slated to start for the Cowboys while junior southpaw Jamie Rodrigue will take the hill for the Huskers.
