STILLWATER, Okla.-Catcher Jason Jaramillo's three-run double sparked a six-run sixth inning as Oklahoma State rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat Nebraska 8-4 in Big 12 baseball action Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
The Pokes trailed 3-1 with one out in the sixth when Paul Powell hit a solo homer to left, his 12th of the year, to start the rally. A pitch by Husker starter Jamie Rodrigue hit designated hitter Zach Cates and then Rob Watson followed with a single to center. Pinch hitter Kenny Hansley walked to load the bases for Jaramillo who doubled down the leftfield line to give the Pokes a 5-3 lead. Centerfielder Jeff Salazar then hit a two-run homer to right to push the OSU advantage to 7-3.
The Huskers scored a run in the eighth on catcher Jed Morris' solo homer to right-center, his second of the game, to cut the Cowboy lead to 7-4. OSU shortstop Rob Watson got the run back in OSU's half of the inning with a solo blast to left-center, his sixth of the year.
Oklahoma State snapped a seven game losing streak to Nebraska and improved to 29-10 on the year and 8-5 in Big 12 play while the Huskers dropped to 25-14 and 11-9 in league play.
Both starting pitchers went the distance with Cowboy sophomore Scott Baker picking up the win to move to 5-0 on the year. The Shreveport, La., native recorded Oklahoma State's first pair of consecutive nine-inning complete games since current Cowboy assistant Jason Bell achieved the feat in the 1994 season. He gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out six and walking one.
Husker starter Jamie Rodrigue dropped his first game in 20 appearances and 18 starts to fall to 5-1 on the year. He allowed eight runs on 11 hits while walking one and striking out three.
Nebraska got on the board in the second inning when designated hitter Justin Seely scored on a sacrifice fly by second baseman Will Bolt. Catcher Jed Morris made it 2-0 in the third with a solo homer to right field.
OSU cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth when second baseman Nebasett Brown knocked a one-out RBI single to centerfield that scored catcher Jason Jaramillo and advanced centerfielder Jeff Salazar to third. The Pokes attempted to tie the game when Daylon Monette lined out to left, but Salazar was thrown out at the plate by Husker leftfielder Daniel Bruce.
NU first baseman Matt Hopper blasted a solo homer to right-center in the sixth to put the Huskers up 3-1.
Several Cowboys had multi-hits led by Jeff Salazar, who was 3-for-5 with one run and two RBIs. Nebasett Brown, Rob Watson and Jason Jaramillo had two hits each to help propel the Pokes to the win.
Catcher Jed Morris led Nebraska offensively with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with two homers and two RBIs.
The teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Sophomore Jimmy Rhodes is slated to start for the Cowboys while freshman southpaw Brian Duensing will take the hill for the Huskers.
