MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Sophomore righthander Scott Baker allowed only one run in 6.1 innings of work and Oklahoma State avoided a furious Kansas State late-inning rally to win, 10-9, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Frank Meyers Field.
Baker scattered six hits in the start with a strikeout and two walks to improve to 2-0 on the year.
OSU led 10-4 in the bottom of the ninth before KSU came back to score five runs, three coming via a homer by centerfielder Gabe Luttrell off of reliever Justin Meccage to cut the lead to one, 10-9. Sophomore Joe Weaver then came on and induced a groundout to end the game and pick up his second save of the season.
Designated hitter Josh Fields led the offensive charge with a 3-for-5 afternoon at the plate. He opened the scoring in the contest with a solo homer in the second inning. OSU added a run in the third on a RBI single by third baseman Paul Powell to take a 2-0 lead.
Catcher Matt Oakes extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth with a solo homer to left, his second of the season. Kansas State scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, courtesy of a RBI single by catcher Ryan Baldwin.
Fields opened the sixth with a triple to left-center and scored when Nebasett Brown reached base on an error, extending the OSU lead to 4-1. The Pokes took advantage of two Wildcat errors in the seventh to score two more runs, one on a wild pitch and another on a RBI single by Fields to push the lead to 6-1.
Oklahoma State took advantage of two more Wildcat errors in the eighth and added two more runs to lead 8-1 going into the bottom half. KSU rallied back with four hits off of Meccage to score three runs and cut the lead to 8-4.
Powell and Brown hit solo homers in the ninth to round out the scoring for the Cowboys.
With the win, OSU improved to 15-6 and 3-2 in the Big 12 while Kansas State fell to 11-10 and 0-2 in conference.
