GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Oklahoma State's softball team opened the regular season today with two wins in the UTA Classic, hosted by Texas-Arlington. The Cowgirls won their first game 6-1 against Texas-San Antonio and defeated Baylor 7-3 in a late afternoon matchup.
In the first game, Oklahoma State defeated Texas-San Antonio with a scoring frenzy in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Jade Lindly hit a two-run home run to put the Cowgirls up by three. Freshman Megan Carey followed with a double and junior Lauren Bay hit a single to score Carey. Junior Ryan Realmuto continued the strong offensive performance with a two-run home run of her own, which led to a 6-0 Cowgirl advantage. On the mound, junior Cami Carter turned in a solid performance and recorded six strikeouts in her first regular season action at Oklahoma State.
"We were happy with our performance, both offensively and defensively," said Head Coach Margaret Rebenar. "Casey O'Neill had some great defensive plays and we played great considering the small amount of practice we have had due to the weather."
In game two, the Cowgirls defeated Baylor by scoring four runs in the fourth inning and three in the sixth. Realmuto continued to see success at the plate when she hit a triple in the top of the fourth and scored two runs to put the Cowgirls on the scoreboard. Lindly stepped up and hit her second two-run home run of the day to give the Cowgirls a 4-0 advantage over the Lady Bears. In the sixth inning, Realmuto, Lindly and sophomore Calli Behmer each hit a home run to put OSU up by seven. Bay was near perfect on the mound, recording 12 strikeouts, one walk and one hit in six innings.
"Both pitchers had a great first outing in regards to competing against tough Division I schools," said Rebenar. "Lauren Bay and Cami Carter both came out very composed and confident."
Oklahoma State (2-0) continues pool play tomorrow when they face Louisiana-Monroe at 9 a.m. and Texas-Arlington at 1 p.m.
