Oklahoma State Edges Past Cal Poly 4-3

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior first baseman Ali Modami knocked in the game winning run with a base hit in the bottom of the ninth inning to push Oklahoma State past Cal Poly 4-3 in baseball action Saturday afternoon at Page Stadium.
OSU moved to 4-0 with the win while Cal Poly fell to 8-7-1 on the season.
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when shortstop Rob Watson scored on second baseman Nebasett Brown's RBI groundout, giving the Pokes an early 1-0 lead.
Jose Virgil's solo homer, his first of the year, in the fourth inning extended the OSU advantage to 2-0 before Cal Poly scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth cutting the lead to 2-1. The Cowboys got the run back in the bottom half of the inning when centerfielder Jeff Salazar knocked in Watson, who scored two of the Cowboys four runs in the game.
Cal Poly added another unearned run in the sixth and tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth off of rightfielder Chalon Tietje's RBI groundout. Tietje led the Mustangs at the plate with a 3-for-4 showing while designated hitter Bryan Gant chipped in with three hits as well.
Sophomore pitcher Shane Hawk started for the Cowboys and went five innings, giving up one unearned run off of six hits while striking out six and walking one.
Sophomore reliever Joe Weaver picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the year and 9-0 overall at OSU. Southpaw reliever Frank McLaughlin took the loss for Cal Poly to drop to 0-2.
Watson and Salazar both went 2-for-4 to lead the Cowboy hitters.
Oklahoma State will have Sunday off before closing out the Los Angeles trip with a game against UC Riverside on Monday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. CT.
