San Diego Rallies Past Oklahoma State 13-9

SHREVEPORT, LA - San Diego rallied back from a 9-4 deficit with a nine-run eighth inning to defeat Oklahoma State, 13-9, in baseball action Saturday evening at Fairgrounds Field.
The Toreros improve to 12-3 on the year and 2-0 in the tournament while the Cowboys fell to 5-2 and 0-2 this weekend.
Sophomore pitcher Joe Weaver took the loss in relief for the Pokes to drop to 1-1 on the year. The setback was also the first of his collegiate career as he came into the contest with a 9-0 record in two seasons. Weaver gave up four runs on three hits in 0.2 innings of work with three walks.
The Cowboys jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the second inning keyed by a RBI double by centerfielder Jeff Salazar, who finished the day two-for-five with two doubles and two RBI.
San Diego would score a run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings while Oklahoma State added a run in the fourth and the sixth to make the score 5-4 heading into the seventh.
OSU scored four runs in the inning to take a 9-4 advantage and seemingly take control of the ballgame. Ali Modami and Daylon Monette had RBI hits for the Cowboys in the inning.
San Diego started its rally in the eighth of off Cowboy reliever John Forrest who had relieved starter Nick McCurdy in the fifth inning. USD had seven hits in the inning and went ahead of the Pokes when second baseman Matt McCoy walked with the bases loaded off of Weaver. Six batters went to the plate before OSU recorded its first out of the inning.
McCurdy went 4.1 innings in the start and gave up three runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out one and walking two.
Designated hitter Kenny Hansley paced the Cowboys at the plate with a four-for-five showing with two RBI. Modami went three-for-four with two runs scored while rightfielder Jose Virgil aided the offense with a two-for-five day at the plate.
Reliever Chad Cummings (1-1) picked up the win in relief for USD which faces Cal State Northridge tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
Oklahoma State will close out the tourney with a 3 p.m. contest against Delaware, which lost to Northridge, 6-2, in today's early game.
