STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team has signed three players to National Letters of Intent it was announced today. Tyler Leon, Zac Reynolds and Casey Wittenberg all cast their lot with the Cowboys and will join the program for the 2003-04 season.
A native of Dallas, Texas, Leon currently attends the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Bradenton, Fla., and is a student at St. Stephen's Episcopal School. In 2000, he became St. Stephen's first individual state champion and is currently ranked ninth nationally in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
A 2002 second-team All-American, Leon earned medalist honors at the 2002 Robert Trent Jones Classic in September, giving him his second career AJGA win.
"My decision had a lot to do with coach Holder and the facilities," Leon said. "I liked seeing how much golf means at Oklahoma State and it is a good school all the way around."
Reynolds, a product of Edmond (Okla.) North High School, was runner-up at the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship as well as the Oklahoma Class 6A State Championship his freshman and sophomore seasons.
The 2000 Oklahoma Junior Amateur champion has six high school tournament wins to his credit and has twice been named to the Daily Oklahoman All-City squad. Reynolds earned third-team All-America status in 2002 after posting four top-10 finishes in national tournaments.
"The facilities there are unbelievable and the coaching is unmatched," Reynolds said. "As many national championships as they have won and with the facilities they have, I don't know why anyone would not want to play there."
Wittenberg, who was named both the Golfweek and AJGA Junior Player of the Year in 2001, hails from Memphis, Tenn., and is currently a senior at the Bradenton (Fla.) Academy as well as a student at the Leadbetter Golf Academy. He was a member of the 2001 USA Junior World Cup Team as well as a 2002 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup participant.
The two-time PGA Tour event participant tied for fourth during the medal play portion of the 2002 Western Amateur. After competing in the PGA's Canon Greater Hartford Open, Wittenberg missed the cut by one stroke at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, carding rounds of 73 and 68.
Wittenberg is the ninth AJGA Player of the Year to sign with Oklahoma State since the award's inception in 1978.
"Someday, I want to play professional golf at the highest level I can and I felt Oklahoma State was the best place for me to reach that goal," Wittenberg said.
