COLUMBIA, Mo. - Oklahoma State's soccer squad was dealt its third loss of the season on Sunday, falling to Missouri, 5-1, at the Audrey J. Walton Complex. The Cowgirls outshot the Tigers 15-to-11, but allowed Missouri to take 73 percent of its shots on goal.
Once again the early minutes of the contest were detrimental for Oklahoma State as Missouri scored its first goal just over one minute into the game. Amber Swinehart took credit for the goal after Karen Bauer put a corner kick in perfect position.
Nine minutes later, Melissa Peabody went straight at Cowgirl goalkeeper Kat Doud and put away what would be the game winner from the center of the penalty box.
The Cowgirls had chances to cut into the 2-0 deficit before halftime, including a free kick on the edge of the Missouri penalty box, but were unable to outsmart the Tiger defenders.
The second stanza was eerily similar to the first, as Missouri gained some breathing room on Peabody's second goal of the game just 20 seconds into the period.
Trailing 3-0, Oklahoma State was awarded a direct kick inside the penalty box with 34 minutes remaining, but Missouri's goalkeeper made a diving save to avoid the score. Still fighting to get their offense going, the Cowgirls were able to get a second shot off on the play, but the Tiger defense successfully thwarted the effort.
Oklahoma State was given a second chance to avoid the shutout and this time the opportunity was not wasted. Jeni Jackson took a free kick from 40 yards out and Nikki Wojtowicz outraced the Tiger defense for a one-on-one goal from five yards out.
With just over 10 minutes remaining, the Tigers regained a four-goal lead, as Jennifer Nobis headed a pass in from Melissa McLellan.
Oklahoma State (11-3, 2-3) will host a pair of Top 10 teams at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex this weekend. Texas A&M will be in town for a 7 p.m. match-up on Friday and Texas will take the field at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
