Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State
January 30, 2002
Lloyd Noble Center - Norman, Okla.
Oklahoma State Head Coach Eddie Sutton:
On the game: "I thought both teams played excellent defense tonight. In the first half we were really stagnant, but I was pleased with the way we competed in the second half. We put ourselves in a position to win, but made too many mistakes in the last five or six minutes to pull it out."
On the second half:
"Two areas in the second half for us were not turning the ball over and our board play. After 10 turnovers in the first half we only had three in the second."
On using three guards:
"The biggest thing with a smaller lineup is if we can defend. Against Colorado we couldn't do that because they are too big. But, we run the offense better with three guards."
On Oklahoma:
"I think OU is the second best team in the league, behind Kansas. I don't think we're a top-10 team, but maybe in the teens."
Oklahoma State Junior Guard Victor Williams:
On the first half: "I thought we were standing around too much. OU's defense came out aggressive and took us out of our game. We used our offense to eat up the clock while we were trying to spread the offense out and get a lot of back cuts. When we weren't successful with that in the first half we came out in the second half and just played basketball."
On OSU:
"We fought hard and that is what this team is made of. We made a couple of mental mistakes at the end that may have cost us the game. When we're up and down the floor that's when we're our best. We've got a great team, and when we want to strap it on and play well, we do."
Oklahoma State Junior Guard Cheyne Gadson:
On his play:
"I went out and just tried to give the team a lift. My thing is just getting into the groove (of the game)."
Oklahoma Quotes
Oklahoma Head Coach Kelvin Sampson
On the game:
"Both teams played their hearts out tonight. I was really impressed with their kids and their moxie. I thought our kids played tremendous defense and we faced adversity in the second half, but we bounced back to hold on. I think we did a lot of good things down the stretch."
On senior Aaron McGhee and junior guard Hollis Price:
"Aaron McGhee had a lot of crucial rebounds for us tonight and played his heart out. He played beyond his stats. Hollis was a leader for us out on the floor tonight. He looked like a first-team All-American and did what leaders do. He's such a mature player and we can always count on him."
On OU's upcoming game at Texas:
"There are no easy road games in this conference. There were some upsets that took place tonight, Texas Tech and Texas lost, and that can't be overlooked. Our kids are going to have to lace them up and play some great defense to be successful down there."
Oklahoma Sophomore Center Jabahri Brown
"My hat is off to Oklahoma State, they are an excellent team and they gave us a real run tonight. Fortunately, we came out on top. The rivalry between OU and OSU is an intense one and we were all pumped for this game. Coming in, we knew this would be one of the biggest games on our schedule. It's a good win for us."
"I feel like we played well tonight, but there is a lot we can improve on and we will. I had a quick start with a couple of blocks and my teammates knew I had their backs on defense. It was good to come out and get this win. This will give us some confidence for the Texas game."
Oklahoma Senior Forward Aaron McGhee
"The last few minutes of the game were real intense. We knew every shot, every rebound, everything was just crucial. I wanted to do whatever I could to help us win this game. I just kept going after the ball and was really persistent with my shot. It wasn't falling down for most of the game, but they went down when it counted."
"It feels good to get a win against OSU. They're a really tough ball club and we needed this. We'll have confidence for our game down in Austin this weekend. We had to get back on the right page and start a new winning streak."
