STILLWATER, Okla. - Dave Hunziker, a 14-year veteran of play-by-play broadcasting has been named the new radio voice of Oklahoma State football and basketball. The announcement was made jointly by OSU and Learfield Sports-Oklahoma/Cowboy Sports Properties.
Hunziker replaces Bill Teegins who was the voice of Cowboy football and basketball for the past 11 years. Teegins was one of the 10 who died in last January's plane crash in Colorado.
"This is the culmination of a long and thoughtful process," said OSU Athletics Director Terry Don Phillips. "Dave Hunziker has already had an outstanding career as a broadcaster and I'm confident we have found the most exciting and qualified person to assume this role at OSU."
Hunziker will come to OSU from Western Kentucky University where he has been the radio voice of Hilltopper football and basketball since July of 2000. He also served as Director of Athletic Broadcasting and Corporate Sales at Western Kentucky.
"This day is the pinnacle of my career," Hunziker said. "I grew up watching Big Eight Conference sports and have admired the Oklahoma State athletic program for years. I look forward to serving the great fans of OSU athletics and am excited about spending many seasons together in Stillwater."
Prior to arriving at Western Kentucky, Hunziker spent nine years as the basketball and baseball voice of Radford University in Radford, Virginia.
He became known on the national level after providing the play-by-play for Fox Sports Net's coverage of the Puerto Rico Thanksgiving Shootout in 1999. From 1996 to 2000, Hunziker provided play-by-play of Big South Conference Basketball to cable outlets on Home Team Sports and SportSouth.
John Anderson, ESPN anchor, says Hunziker is not only one of the top talents in the country, he is a top-notch person. "I've known Dave Hunziker for almost 20 years and he is the nicest person I know. He is also unbelievably good at his job. If I had to choose between watching a game on television or listening to Dave, I would drive around in my car two or three hours and listen to Dave," Anderson said.
After graduating from the University of Missouri in 1988, he worked for KFRU Radio in Columbia and for KOMU TV in Columbia. His first collegiate play-by-play position came in 1991 at Columbia College.
"We are delighted to have Dave on-board as the "Voice of the Cowboys," said Steve Gowan, General Manager of Learfield Sports-Oklahoma/Cowboy Sports Properties. "Dave not only possesses tremendous on-air broadcast talent, but also has significant administrative skills that will enhance his contribution to Oklahoma State University and the Cowboy Sports Radio Network."
