STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State University announced today that Coach Sandy Fischer will be leaving the university after 23 years as Head Softball Coach.
"Coach Fischer has brought national prominence in the softball program to the university and she will be missed," said Athletics Director Terry Don Phillips. "She is an outstanding coach and individual. We wish her the very best."
Since 1978, the nationally-honored coach has built a national powerhouse softball program, leading the Cowgirls to 17 appearances in AIAW or NCAA Division I Regionals, winning nine of them. Under Coach Fischer, the team participated in nine AIAW Nationals or NCAA Women's College World Series, finishing as high as fourth in 1998.
Over the past 11 years, she has paced the OSU Cowgirls to a .738 winning percentage with a 496-176 record. She has coached 16 All-Americans, 60 first-team all-conference players and 49 first-team Academic all-conference student-athletes.
During the past season, Coach Fischer led the team to the Big 12 championship game, losing to last year's NCAA Division I Women's College World Series Champions.
Coach Fischer is a member of a select handful of NCAA coaches who have won 900 games. She has been named Big Eight Coach of the Year four times and National Fastpitch Coaches' Association NCAA Division I Regional Coach of the Year in 1988, 1989, 1993 and 1994. She was also named National Coach of the Year.
She has been inducted into the Western Illinois University Hall of Fame, her alma mater, where she played from 1971-1975.
"It has been an extraordinarily successful 23 years at OSU," Fischer said. "I have had an opportunity to coach some of the best athletes in the nation and world. I look forward to relaxing and taking a breather and continuing to be a supporter of OSU athletics."
