Cowboy Golf Completes First Day at NCAA Championship

DURHAM, N.C. - Oklahoma State's men's golf team stands in 24th place after recording a 12-over-par team total of 300 during Wednesday's first-round action at the NCAA Championship being held at the Duke University Golf Club.
The Cowboys will start play tomorrow 20 strokes behind first-round leader Arizona. The Wildcats were the only school to break par on the day, recording an eight-under team score of 280 to lead Georgia Tech by nine shots.
A Wildcat and Yellow Jacket are also atop the individual race. Arizona's Chris Nallen and Georgia Tech's Kris Mikkelson each carded a six-under total of 66 to lead the field by two strokes.
Individually, P?r Nilsson led the way for the Cowboys, carding a two-over 74. The freshman was one-under through his first six holes before bogeying two of his last three on the front to make the turn at one-over. Nilsson came in with another 37 on the back nine to post his two-over total and finish in a tie for 45th.
Fellow freshman Matt McQuillan also played his first nine holes in one-over-par despite starting the round three-over after two holes. The Kingston, Ontario native rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 before parring out for his 37. McQuillan closed out the round with a 38 to finish in a tie for 66th place at three-over.
Sophomore Boyd Summerhays is also among the players who will start tomorrow's round in 66th place. Summerhays' front nine included seven pars and a birdie on No. 9 before coming in with a three-over 39 on the back side to post a 75.
All-American Anders Hultman and sophomore J.C. DeLeon will start their second rounds in a tie for 96th place with 18 other players at four-over.
The Cowboys will begin play at noon on Thursday on the No. 10 tee.
