SETTING THE SCENE
Oklahoma State's golf team will begin its quest for a 10th NCAA crown
this weekend on familiar territory, as OSU's Karsten Creek Golf Club will
serve as the home for the 2001 NCAA Men's Central Regional. The Tom Fazio
design, which opened in 1994, will host 27 teams and six individuals for the
54-hole event. Ten teams and two individuals from non-qualifying teams will
advance to the NCAA Championship being played at the Duke University Golf
Course in Durham, North Carolina from May 30-June 2.
Last year's OSU squad, which went on to win the NCAA title, finished third at the Central Regional in Victoria, Texas behind conference rival Texas and Kent State. Then-sophomore Anders Hultman was OSU's top finisher, ending the event in ninth place with a 54-hole total of 210.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cowboys made their annual trek to The Maxwell in Ardmore, Oklahoma
last weekend and earned their second runner-up finish of the season. OSU
turned in a 10-over-par team total of 850 to finish two strokes behind
Tulsa. Anders Hultman carded back-to-back rounds of 67 to finish as the
tournament champion at 204 (six-under-par). The win was the junior's third
of the season. P?r Nilsson continued his strong freshman campaign with his
sixth top-20 finish in eleven tournaments. The Ljungsbro, Sweden native
opened with a season-best 66 in the first round and finished the 54-hole
event at 3-over-par and in a tie for 16th place.
IN THE RANKINGS
The Cowboys enter this weekend's tournament ranked No. 9 in the
Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index and No. 15 in the MasterCard Collegiate
Golf Rankings. Individually, Anders Hultman tops the charts for the Cowboys.
Hultman checks in at No. 10 in both polls.
