STILLWATER, Okla - Oklahoma State's baseball team rallied for a pair of runs with two outs in the ninth inning on Tuesday night to defeat Brigham Young 8-7 before a season-high 3,036 fans at Reynolds Stadium.
Cougar reliever James Ray retired the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before Jimbo McAuliff reached on an error by BYU shortstop Seth King. Nebasett Brown dropped a single into center field to put runners on the corners for Jos? Virgil and chase King from the game. Virgil blooped a double down the left field line off of Justin Su'a to plate the tying run.
Luke Scott drew an intentional walk from Su'a to load the bases for Paul Powell, who lined an 0-1 offering into left field to bring home Brown with the winning run.
BYU (29-18) struck first in the contest, getting a three-run homer from Matt Carson in the third inning.
OSU (35-15) countered with a two-run blast from Zach Cates in the bottom half of the frame to pull within a run at 3-2. The Cowboys took the lead in the next inning with four runs off of BYU starter Nate Fernley, who entered the contest with a 12-2 record.
Jake Bollig knocked in the first run of the inning with a check-swing single to left and was followed by a three-run homer by Rob Watson to put OSU in front 6-3.
The Cougars knotted the score at six apiece in the sixth inning with three runs courtesy of five hits and took the lead in the eighth on Shane Belliston's RBI single to center field.
Cowboy freshman Joe Weaver came on to end the BYU threat. The Stillwater, Okla., native worked 1.2 scoreless innings to pick up the win and move to 7-0 on the season. Ray took the loss for the Cougars and fell to 0-3.
OSU will return to action this weekend when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a three-game series with Nebraska.
