Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State Cowboy Football held its final scrimmage of the spring season with just over 100 plays here Saturday afternoon at Lewis Field. It was also the final practice of the spring for OSU under head coach Les Miles.
Cowboy quarterback Aso Pogi shined on offense, connecting on 22-of-31 pass attempts for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Pogi's top targets were Rashaun Woods with four receptions for 83 yards, Willie Young with seven receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown, and John Lewis, a junior college transfer who had four catches for 73 yards, including a 31-yard TD reception.
However, a backup for Pogi has yet to emerge as five other QBs went a combined 4-of-13 for 39 yards and an interception.
On the ground, Tatum Bell led all rushers with 80 yards on 15 carries, an average of 5.3 yards per rush. His game included a 15-yard scoring run on his last carry of the day. Richard Schwarz had 33 yards on five carries, including a 13-yard TD run.
Two linebackers and three defensive backs led the team in tackles. LBs Ahmad Denson and Geoff Beaulieu joined Chris Cole with a team-leading eight tackles, followed by Paul Jones who had seven and Elbert Craig who had six. Beaulieu also had a 32-yard interception return of a Pogi pass. Chris Gray had the other INT, a 11-yard return of a Michael Cox throw.
John Wohlgemuth had a 51-yard punt return down the right sideline during the Cowboys' special-team drills, negating a nice 49-yard punt by Matt Ledbetter. Michael Cooper blocked a Sky Rylant punt, nearly picking the football off in midair.
OSU Football will open the 2001 season on Sept. 1, as the Cowboys travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face the Southern Miss Eagles. Oklahoma State's first home game will be the following Saturday, Sept. 8, as the Cowboys host Louisiana Tech.
