TULSA, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's soccer team opened the spring season with a first-place finish at the Tulsa Seven-A-Side Tournament on Saturday. OSU won four of its five matches, marking the fourth consecutive year the Cowgirls have won the event.
OSU opened play with a pair of victories, receiving a forfeit against Friends University before defeating Tulsa, 5-2.
OSU suffered its lone setback of the weekend to Central Oklahoma, 5-3, before bouncing back with a pair of wins to close out the tournament.
In the semifinals, the Cowgirls dropped Drury 6-3 followed by a 4-0 blanking of Oral Roberts in the championship match.
Forward Joanne Edwards led OSU offensively, tallying 10 goals in the tournament. The Liverpool, England native was the Cowgirls' leading scorer last season with five goals.
"Joanne was brilliant. Every time she touched the ball something good happened," assistant coach Colin Carmichael said.
The Cowgirls also got key performances Kim Graves, who added three goals in the final two games, and Jeni Jackson, the anchor in the defensive backfield.
"Kim stepped up big time for us offensively and Jeni was a huge brick wall in the backfield for us," Carmichael noted.
The Cowgirls will continue the spring schedule on Saturday when they travel to Tahlequah to take on Northeastern State University.
