STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's baseball team saw its eight-game winning streak come to an end on Friday, as the Texas Longhorns dropped the Cowboys 2-1 in ten innings at Reynolds Stadium.
OSU, 18-4 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 play, scored its only run of the contest and took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on Nebasett Brown's solo home run.
However, the Cowboys were unable to solve UT starter Gerrit Simpson the rest of the day. The Claremore, Okla., native worked 7.1 innings on the day, scattering six hits and striking out nine.
OSU starter Josh Merrigan was equally impressive, tossing eight innings, surrendering only two hits and one unearned run.
The Longhorns, who moved to 15-11 and 5-2, evened the score at one apiece in the top of the fifth when Ryan Brooks came home on a throwing error by Cowboy shortstop Brian Kraft.
Both teams squandered chances throughout the game, leaving a combined 18 runners on base and sending the Cowboys to just their second extra-inning game of the season.
In Texas' half of the tenth, the Longhorns' lead-off hitter Tim Moss reached on an error and advanced to second on Omar Quintanilla's groundout to second before advancing to third on a passed ball. UT catcher Ryan Hubele singled through a drawn-in Cowboy infield to provide the winning run.
Texas reliever Kevin Frizzell worked 2.1 innings to move his record to 3-1, while OSU freshman Shane Hawk was tagged with his first loss of the season and fell to 1-1.
The two teams will square of in the middle game of the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
