EUGENE, Ore. - Oklahoma State's second-ranked wrestling team grabbed its second victory of the day after defeating the Oregon Ducks 30-3 on Sunday night in Eugene, Ore.
The Cowboys (5-1) opened the day with a 38-3 win over Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore.
The evening started with the heavyweights as No. 13 James Huml slid past 10th-ranked Eric Webb with a 3-2 victory to put the Cowboys out in front 3-0.
After sitting out the Oregon State dual, Skyler Holman returned to action and held off No. 10 Shaun Williams 5-4 in the 125-pound bout to extend the lead.
Top-ranked Johnny Thompson was leading the Ducks' Mark Mitchell 3-1 in the 133-pound weight class before a stalling penalty narrowed the gap to 3-2. Despite flurries from both wrestlers, neither wrestler could convert and Thompson made the final score stand to give OSU a 9-0 lead in the team race.
All-American Shane Roller defeated Tony Overstake 11-2 at 157 pounds to give the Cowboys their first bonus points of the contest. Roller needed a takedown at the buzzer to secure the major decision.
Top-ranked Pat Popolizio dominated Elias Soto 13-2 in the 184-pound weight class and No. 20 Willie Gruenwald controlled Jake Leair 12-3 in the 197-pound division to provide back-to-back major decisions for OSU to close out the match.
Chad Reid made his first appearance in the Cowboy lineup this season, squaring off with Shane Webster at 174 pounds. Reid started quickly with three first-period takedowns and was able to hang on for a 7-6 decision.
Jerrod Sanders, like Holman, returned to the mat after getting the afternoon off and recorded a 4-1 win over Casey Hunt at 149 pounds.
Second-ranked Tyrone Lewis slid past No. 11 Eugene Harris in the 165-pound weight class with a 3-2 victory to give OSU a 16-point cushion in the team race.
Brian Watson scored the only points of the day for the Ducks, picking up a 3-2 win over Ronnie Delk in the 141-pound tilt. The Cowboys will return to action on Dec. 20 when they travel to Reno, Nev., for the Reno Tournament of Champions.
