CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oklahoma State's second-ranked wrestling team won nine matches against No. 24 Oregon State on its way to a 38-3 win on Sunday afternoon in Corvallis, Ore.
No. 16 Jason Cooley edged out eighth-ranked Cowboy James Huml in the heavyweight division to give the home squad an early 3-0 lead. The two wrestlers were deadlocked at one at the end of regulation and continued on to a tiebreaker. Huml won the toss and chose down, but Cooley rode Huml out in the extra frame to record the win.
Oklahoma State (4-1) bounced back in a big way, claiming the next nine matches which included five major decisions, two decisions, a fall and an injury default.
A pair of fresh faces, All-American Matt Brown and North Carolina transfer John Marc Bentley, made their first appearances of the year in the Cowboy lineup.
Brown, who had been hampered by a knee injury, got off to a slow start and was down 2-1 after the first period, but battled back to defeat Oregon State's Michael Delaney 5-4 in the 125-pound weight class.
Bentley, who won his weight class at a tournament last weekend, dominated Jordan Barich on his way to an 18-5 victory in the 149-pound weight class.
Third-ranked Shane Roller made short work of Micah Houston, needing only 36 seconds to record a fall in the 157-pound weight class.
Top-ranked wrestlers Johnny Thompson and Pat Popolizio added to the total by getting major decisions in the 133 and 184-pound weight classes, respectively. Thompson defeated Tim Norman 12-3, while Popolizio rolled past No. 20 Isaac Weber 11-2.
Second-ranked Tyrone Lewis, and No. 20 Willie Gruenwald snagged major decisions as well at the 165 and 197-pound weight classes. Lewis ran past Oregon State's Jed Pennell, earning a 17-6 triumph that included 2:11 in riding time. Gruenwald put the finishing touches on the match, handling Jason Lovell 14-4.
Tenth-ranked Ty Wilcox bounced back from a tough loss last weekend with an upset of No. 6 Nathan Coy. Wilcox got the first points of the bout by scoring on a quick counter attack in the first period. Wilcox pulled another takedown in the third stanza and tacked on the riding time point on his way to a 5-3 decision.
In the 141-pound match, the Beavers' Casey Horn was forced into an injury default against the Cowboys' Ronnie Delk. Horn was unable to continue after receiving an elbow to the head from Delk that drew blood and forced the match to be halted.
Oklahoma State will close out the day with a 7 p.m. (9 p.m.CST) contest against Oregon.
