Postgame Quotes
Oklahoma State Head Coach Eddie Sutton
On the game
"It was frustrating. First of all, you have to give Wichita State and their team a lot of credit. I thought they played the game so that they had a chance to win. They played good defense. They really shortened the length of the game with their handling of the basketball. That's the way Mr. Iba used to coach the game.
"They put us on defense and really executed their offense well. I thought at the beginning of the game we started out really flat. Then for about six or seven minutes we played pretty well. I think we got up to a 12 point lead and probably had a chance to break the game if we'd hit free throws, really tightened up our defense a little bit and rebounded a little bit better. You have to give them credit. They came back and hit some big shots and got right back in the ball game. In the second half it was just a seesaw affair. We didn't play very well in a lot of areas.
"It's better to play poorly and win than it is to play well and lose. It gives me reason now to really go back and get a lot of things corrected and work really hard the next couple of weeks. We only have one game in the next 13 days. Tomorrow is our day off, and then Monday morning we start at 6:30. We'll get some of things corrected, so we'll play better."
On the single digit leads
"I thought we had a chance a couple of times to get a lead in double figures. I told the team if you get into double figures, the game is over. We just never could make the plays, and they did."
On Wichita State
"They're a really nice team. They've done a really good job with their ball club."
Oklahoma State Forward Fredrik J?nz?n
On the FInal Shot
"When you watch it from right under the basket it was kind of hard to see if it was going in or not. I didn't think that it was going to make it. That is a scary position to put ourselves in."
On the Teams Struggles
"I don't know if was really our offense, I think that it started out with our defense. You need to play good defense to carry it over to the offensive end. We never really had that energy and aggressiveness on defense. We let them reverse the ball from side to side and let them get inside for easy shots. Perhaps we thought that we were a better basketball team than we are. We've got to come out and play every night."
On Playing a Close Game
"I think that it was a wake up call for most of us, that we are not going to go out and win easily. We need to come prepared and play hard every game. Wichita State played a great game. We've got to play better than this."
Oklahoma State Guard Victor Williams
On the game
"We just have to get better in all aspects of the game. I am not taking credit away from Wichita State they came out and played a great game."
On Wichita State
"Wichita State always plays great against us. Even my redshirt year when they played against Desmond (Mason) they were physical and made their shots."
Oklahoma State Guard Maurice Baker
On the game
"Right now we just need to keep our focus and go on from here. We came out and played hard the first half and they did too. They made it a close game at the end, which we need to learn to put it away when we can."
On Wichita State
"I knew they were going to come in and play hard. They can shoot the ball real well, so I knew they were going to come in and make some shots."
Wichita State Coach Mark Turgeon
On the game
"I was really proud of team tonight. We really played well. I thought we controlled the tempo from the very beginning. We had two days to prepare for this game. My senior are just tremendous. Everyone was battling. I thought at the end the pressure was on them because they were supposed to beat us. We stayed in the zone because we had trouble rebounding. When you play the 14th-ranked team in the country and you have a shot to win it, that is really good."
On the last shot
"We wanted to win. When you play on the road, you go for the win. I thought C.C. McFall's last shot was in. I think our team thought we were going to win. They were relaxed. It was a play that we had never run before. In the last minute, we ran two plays that we had never ran before. I thought we executed both of them great. I was really proud of our guys."
On holding OSU
"I think we held Oklahoma State to 61 points because we controlled the tempo of the game. It surprised me how unselfish they were tonight. The difference in the game was that they picked up their defense. "
Wichita State guard C.C. McFall
On last shot
"Coming out of the huddle, I knew I was going to get it. I just wish I could have gotten a closer look. I wanted that shot and I think I earned the right to take that shot. I worked hard all summer and that is the type of shot I want. I will hit it next time if I have the opportunity."
On improving since last year
"We were disappointed that we lost. Before we came in, we knew that we could play with anybody. We played hard and that is the way we are going to play. "
