HONOLULU, Hawaii - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team outscored Weber State by 16 points in the second half on Friday afternoon to defeat the Wildcats 77-64 in the first round of the Panda Travel Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Marred by 18 first-half fouls, the Cowgirls (3-1) trailed WSU (2-1) by three at the intermission. Senior Tari Cummings scored seven of OSU's first nine points to give the Cowgirls an early 9-6 advantage.
The two squads exchanged leads nine times in the period, including three times in the final minute of play. Sophomore reserve Trisha Skibbe scored three of her 17 points on her only trey of the game with 43 seconds left to give OSU its final lead of the half.
A layup by the Wildcats' Sara Sonveau tied the game at 32 before Jamie Peterson made a circus shot after being fouled by OSU senior Machell Roberts and hit the ensuing free throw to send WSU into the locker room with a 35-32 advantage.
Led by junior Chantoya Hawkins, the Cowgirls exploded in the second half, going on a 17-0 run to build a 53-40 cushion. Hawkins scored seven points during the stretch on her way to 17 points in the contest.
The Wildcats cut the lead to seven with 7:33 remaining before senior Kara Faulk, who finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, hit a pair of free throws and freshman Julie Dawson hit a three-point basket with the shot clock winding down to push the lead back to 12 and propel the Cowgirls to the win.
OSU will take on Penn State in the second round on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. (HST).
