Postgame Quotes
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
"I thought the team played better tonight. We still didn't play very well defensively. We gave up too many open treys. I thought other than that and maybe fouling too much (we played better). Part of our game plan was to make sure that we didn't put them on the line too much because they're an excellent free throw shooting ball club. The other thing was to limit their treys. They got eleven of them, but they really didn't have that high of a percentage. Fortunately, we got by with it. We didn't turn the ball over as many times. I told them 12 times was our goal. They turned it over 13 times. We still missed too many easy shots at the offensive end. At times we didn't have very good judgment on shot selection, and of course we didn't shoot free throws well."
On playing Cincinnati Friday
"We've got four days left to try to get ready for Cincinnati. I told the team a few minutes ago that we'll have to play better than we did tonight to beat the Bearcats."
On OSU's defense
"Hopefully our defense can come together. I know in time we'll be a good defensive ball club. I'm disappointed that we're not better than we are at the present time. I think we will have enough offensive weapons once we get where we're executing our offense a little better. I think we'll be okay there."
On Maurice Baker
"We've been on Maurice about not being aggressive enough. We've felt like he's been too passive. I told him at half time that he was too passive out there. I felt like in the second half he played much better. He was more aggressive. He rebounded well like he did last year."
Guard Victor Williams
On feeling comfortable and in the zone like against OU
"It was like that. I think I had 18 points against OU in the first half last year, and I think I had 18 points in the first half tonight. It was just one of those nights where I was feeling it and everything was falling for me."
On taking care of the ball
"He (Coach Sutton) was really on us last week. I made a nickname for him, I called him a junkyard dog because he was barking at us all last week. He has really emphasized that throughout his coaching career he has wanted a point guard that could take care of the ball. Me and Mo (Baker) combined for 11 turnovers last game, so he really wanted us to keep it down this game."
On the multipe offensive threats
"You never know where it's going to come from with this team. We've got guys that can really shoot the ball coming off of the bench and in the starting lineup. Coach (Sutton) can hit you with so many different lineups with this ballclub. I think that this will help us out later in the year when people's legs start to give in, people will just start stepping up and hitting shots."
Guard Cheyne Gadson
On playing first game as a Cowboy
"I was a little nervous at first but once I played a few minutes I settled down. As the game progressed I played a little better."
On preparing for Cincinnati
"We need four days of hard practice to prepare for Cincinnati. We can't turn the ball over like we have been."
Forward Ivan McFarlin
On the game
"Our point guards played really well. From Victor's (Williams) first shot we knew that he was ready to play. Mo (Baker) was a little quiet at first but he really hustled and made plays when we needed them. You never know who is going to show up and play. One night it could be our post players and the other night it could be our guards. The bottom line is that we need to work hard this week and we can't turn the ball over like we have been."
Head Coach Phil Bryant
On game
"We knew coming in that they were a ranked team. We thought they would be effective in their perimeter game, and they were. Victor Williams hurt us. He was able to get any kind of open look he wanted. We gave it everything we had and never gave up. our job is to come in and help the team we are playing. I was impressed with OSU. I thought their defensive level was good as well as their rebounding. I am happy with how we played."
On the atmosphere
"I always go up to the top of the stadium and get some families and bring them down to sit on the bench. The kids at the end were great and the students were great. It is so much different just between OU and here. The energy level here is just tremendous. The players were talking about how much they enjoyed it. This rivals Kansas on how much energy is produced and how much fun they are having. We were really impressed. It was my first time in Stillwater, and I had a really fun experience. It was good to see their students and basketball fans having a good time."
