Looking Ahead
Oklahoma State's women's soccer team (7-9-1 overall and 2-6-1 Big 12)
wraps up its conference slate this weekend with a crucial road battle
against Oklahoma (9-6-1 and 3-5-1) at 7 p.m. on Friday night at the OU
Soccer Complex in Norman. The Cowgirls will return home to close out the
regular season on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Arkansas-Little Rock at the
Cowgirl Soccer Complex.
This year's bedlam battle has added incentive with the eighth and final spot in the Big 12 Tournament at stake. OU currently holds the eighth spot, but an OSU win would give the school its first-ever tournament berth. The Cowgirls hold a 5-0-0 advantage all-time against the Sooners. However, all but the first-ever meeting between the two schools have been decided by one goal and three of the contests have gone to overtime, including last season's 2-1 double overtime thriller.
OU is led offensively by sophomore Logan Womack's 25 points. The Norman, Okla., native has tallied 12 goals and one assist on the season.
The Sooners boast a strong defense as well, surrendering only 14 goals in their 16 games this season.
OSU added the UALR contest to replace its Sept. 14 match against Northwestern (La.) State that was cancelled due to the Sept. 11 attacks on the East Coast.
Admission to the game will be free of charge.
The only previous meeting between the two schools came in 1996 with the Cowgirls prevailing 3-1.
Week in Review
Oklahoma State's soccer squad was unable to overcome a pair of early first-half goals on Friday night, losing 4-0 to Texas before 1,289 fans at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Cowgirls fell victim to a pair of goals by UT's Kelly McDonald in the game's first 11 minutes. The Longhorns (10-3-0, 8-0-0) outshot OSU 9-4 in the half on their way to their 10th consecutive win.
McDonald put UT in front in the game's fourth minute on a double assist from Kati McBain and Kelly Wilson before striking again at the 10:58 mark on another feed from Wilson.
McBain put home a penalty kick at the 64:20 mark to extend the lead to three goals before Wilson closed out the scoring 36 seconds later to provide the game's final margin.
OSU was without the services of two of its top players, sophomore forward Kim Graves and freshman defender Marcela Nova, due to injuries and was outshot by a 26-5 margin in the contest.
Texas A&M's soccer team rode the momentum of three first-half goals by forward Nicky Thrasher to a 5-1 victory over Oklahoma State on Sunday afternoon before 1,729 fans at the Aggie Soccer Complex.
Thrasher got the Aggies (10-3-1 overall and 7-1-1 Big 12) on the board just 11 seconds into the contest after scooting a shot past Cowgirl goalkeeper Kat Doud from 10 yards out. The senior struck exactly eight minutes later, converting a pass from Andrea Starns to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the game's 10th minute, Thrasher completed her hat trick, scoring from six yards out after taking a pass from Kristen Strutz and dribbling past Doud.
The Cowgirls got on the board at the 12:05 mark when sophomore forward Joanne Edwards put home a cross from freshman forward Jolene Schweitzer to cut the deficit to 3-1. The tally was the Liverpool, England, native's fifth of the season and fourth in Big 12 action.
Starns scored two minutes into the second half after heading in a feed from Strutz. Linsey Johnson recorded a goal off a header as well, finding the net on a Jodie Mitchell cross in the 71st minute to close out the game's scoring.
Texas A&M outshot OSU by a 34-3 margin and allowed only one shot on goal in the contest.
Foot Notes
Sophomore forward Joanne Edwards has come alive in conference play. The
Liverpool, England, native has scored four of her five goals and recorded
two of her three assists against Big 12 foes.
Freshman forward Jolene Schweitzer's 18 points are the most by a Cowgirl since Andrea Larsen had 18 in 1997.
Junior goalkeeper Kat Doud's 10 saves against Texas A&M marked the third contest this season she has reached double figures in saves.
In all 17 of OSU's games this season, Doud has gone the duration in net, logging 1,572 minutes, 15 minutes shy of her personal best set a year ago.
