STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's cross country team entered the national rankings for the first time this season at No. 20 after their runner-up showing at the Big 12 Championships.
The rankings are compiled each week by www.FinishLynx.com. This week the Cowgirls had 67 votes to be in the Top 25 and are ranked 20th behind Notre Dame. Stanford is No. 1 in the poll, while opponents Georgetown, Colorado and Arkansas are 3rd, 7th and 12th respectively. Colorado and Oklahoma State are the only two Big 12 schools ranked in the poll.
"We have taken second place to some national powers. Georgetown, Arkansas and Colorado have been on top," said Assistant Coach Clint Whitaker. "Just being in the same company as these powers is quite an accomplishment for Oklahoma State. This is one of the highest rankings that the women's team has ever gotten in the history of Oklahoma State. Head Coach Catrina Acosta, Assistant Coach Kim Whataker and I have been working diligently from 5:30 AM to 10:00 PM seven days a week and it finally looks like there is going to be light at the end of the tunnel. We are very proud of the girls and the way that they have been representing Oklahoma State. We have been running well and are looking forward to continued success."
This is the first time the women have garnered a ranking since 1998. The Cowgirls will be competing in the Midwest Regional on Nov. 10 in Carbondale, Ill.
