STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics http://www.okstate.com) - Oklahoma State's Sara Wells and Junior Vasquez were the top finishers for the Pokes at today's Cowboy Jamboree in Stillwater.
OSU's men's and women's cross country teams hosted the 63rd annual Cowboy Jamboree, one of the longest-running cross country meets in the nation.
Wells, a senior from Salina, Kan., led the Cowgirls to a team finish of second-place. Her 17:29 finish in the 5K was almost a full minute improvement from her time at last year's Cowboy Jamboree.
"I just cannot say enough good things about Sara," said Catrina Acosta, women's head coach. "It was interesting to see her really challenged today. She had to put forth effort and I was pleased with the way that she ran."
Sophomore Alexandra Lindquist made her season appearance at the Jamboree today. Lindquist, the 1998 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, sat out the majority of the 1999 season with stress fractures in her feet. At today's meet, she finished seventh with a time of 18:24.
Araceli Davila, Marie Nilsson and Ami Butler finished in time to secure the second-place finish for the Cowgirls. Texas Christian took home the team title, but OSU still finished ahead of Big 12 Competitors Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas and Oklahoma.
"I was surprised that we beat all of the Big 12 teams that were represented today. I am glad because this gives me a better understanding of where we are in the Big 12. I told the girls that this was going to be a pressure situation and they pulled through for me," Acosta said.
On the men's side, the Cowboys took a third-place team finish, behind Abilene Christian and Arkansas.
"I was not surprised that Abilene Christian beat Arkansas," said Dick Weis, men's head coach. "Abilene Christian has five Kenyans on their team. And they are a NCAA Division II school, which means that they can have older guys compete on their team. That allows them to have maturity."
OSU's Junior Vasquez was the top finisher for the Cowboys, capturing the sixth-place spot in 24:32. Freshman Jason Woolhouse wasn't far behind Vasquez, finishing in 24:49, good enough for the ninth-place spot. Matt Hart, Bruce Wright and Gregory Rouault finished in time to capture the third-place spot for the Cowboys.
"Junior Vasquez ran the best race of this life today. I am sort of happy with the way the rest of the team ran. We just are not consistent. We definitely are a young team. I am happy with the way we finished under the circumstances," said Weis.
The Cowboys' next appearance is scheduled for Oct. 14 at the Arkansas Chili Pepper. The Cowgirls will return to action for the Oct. 14 Pre-National meet in Ames, Iowa.
