OSU Hosts 63rd Annual Cowboy Jamboree Oklahoma State is gearing up to host the 63rd annual Cowboy Jamboree. The Jamboree started in 1937 and has been running every year since except for the six years from 1940-45 during World War II. This year's meet features collegiate teams from 43 schools. There will be approximately 416 men running in the University Men and Men's Community College races. Approximately 298 women will run the the two women's collegiate races. An expected 20 runners will compete unattached. For a course map, please see page 3.
Results on the Internet, Fax-On-Demand Results for the Cowboy Jamboree will be posted on Info Connection fax-on-demand and on the Interet (www.okstate.com). The results from the Cowboy Jamboree can be accessed by dialing from your fax machine 1-800-300-2050. The Big 12 Conference code is 1212, and the document number is 1475. You will need a personal identification number in order to access Info Connection. If you do not have a PIN, please call Pivotal Communications at (770) 399-0096. Hopefully, the fax-on-demand will be updated by 1:00 p.m. (CDT) and the Internet within the day. Results will be posted here at the course on the back side of the winner's stand.
Cowboys/Cowgirls Begin Season with Wins OSU's men's and women's cross country teams have opened their seasons with back-to-back wins. The Cowboys took tites at the Sept. 2 Wichita State Gold Classic and Sept. 16 at Princeton University. They are currently ranked 17th in the nation. The Cowgirls brought home the title from the Sept. 1 UTEP Opener. On Sept. 16, they tied for a first-place finish with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock at the SMU Invitational.
Wells and Vasquez Garner Big 12 Runner of the Week honors Last week, OSU's Sara Wells and Junior Vasquez were named the Big 12 Runners of the Week. Wells, a senior from Salina, Kan., led the Cowgirls to a first-place tie with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock at the Sept. 16 SMU Invitational in Dallas, Texas. Wells, gained the individual title for herself at the meet, finishing the 5K in 17:20.44. Vasquez, a senior from Rolla, Kan., led the Cowboys to a win at the Princeton Invitational on Sept. 16. He finished the race in 24:33, giving him a second-place finish.
Lindquist to Make First Season Appearance, Bergstrom and Connolly to Sit Out OSU's Sophomore Alexandra Lindquist is scheduled to make her first season appearance at the 2000 Cowboy Jamboree. Lindquist was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year in 1998. The Norrtajle, Sweden, native finished the fifth in the 1998 Big 12 Championships with a time of 17:42.8. Unfortunately, Lindquist sat out the majority of the 1999 cross country season and the 2000 track & field season with stress fractures in her feet. However, she has been training all summer, including competing in the Swedish National Championships. Due to illness, Cowboys Johan Bergstrom and Kevin Connolly are not expected to participate in this year's Cowboy Jamboree.
Father & Son For the past two years, Coach Weis' team has faced Coach Weis' team in the university men's race at the Cowboy Jamboree. Dick Weis is the coach here at Oklahoma State, while his son, Joe Weis, is the coach at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. In 1998, Dodge City beat the Cowboys at the Jamboree. This year, Dodge City will compete in the college/junior college race, and the Cowboys will run in the university men's race.
