STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Oklahoma State women's cross country has started its season off on the right foot ... or feet. Tonight, at their season opener in El Paso, Texas, the Cowgirls acquired their meet title of the season. They finished first at the UTEP Opener, 14 points ahead of the University of El Paso's team, hosts of the meet.
Senior Sara Wells, was the first runner across the finish line, with a time of 16:51 on the 2.9 mile circuit. Senior Araceli Davila pulled off a fifth place finish with her 17:55 time. Freshman Marie Nilsson was the third Cowgirl to finish, placing 10th with a time of 18:49. Freshman Ami Butler was right behind Nilsson, placing 13th in 19:01. Freshman Katie Kelly grabbed the no. 5 spot for the Cowgirls, finishing 20th with a time of 19:24.
The Cowgirls opened the 1999 cross country season at the UTEP Opener as well. However, this year's first place finish is an improvement from last year's second place title.
The team will return to action in two weeks at the Sept. 16 SMU Invite in Dallas, Texas.
