EDMOND, Okla. --- Despite being outshot 12-9, Oklahoma State picked up a 1-0 win in the Cowgirls' season opener against in-state rival Oral Roberts on Friday night at the Edmond Soccer Complex.
Cowgirl freshman Joanne Edwards' goal at the 19:22 mark of the first half proved to be the difference for the Cowgirls. A native of Liverpool, England, Edwards lofted a shot just over the outstretched hands of ORU goaltender Christy Chapman to provide the game's lone score.
Both teams, who combined for 40 fouls on the night, struggled to get going offensively. Edwards' goal was OSU's only shot on goal for the contest, while the Golden Eagles could only muster seven shots on the Cowgirls' net.
Sophomore goalkeeper Katharine Doud was perfect for the Cowgirls, saving all seven ORU shot attempts.
The Cowgirls will return to Edmond on Sunday to take on The Tulsa Golden Hurricane at 5 p.m.
