Howell, Men's Golf Move into NCAA Lead
June 01, 2000 | Cowboy Golf
At 19-under for the tournament, OSU has a one-shot lead over first-round leader Texas and a five-stroke advantage over Georgia Tech, with no other team within 10 strokes of the lead.
Charles Howell, in third place after a shooting a 5-under first-round score of 67, shot 66 Thursday to tie Texas' David Gossett for the individual lead at 11-under-par. Howell shot 5-under on the back nine Thursday to make his run.
Senior Landry Mahan continued his impressive tournament, shooting 68 -- his first sub-70 score since March 11 -- to move into seventh place at 6-under for the tournament. True freshman J.C. DeLeon also had a strong day, carding a 70, his best score this spring, to stand at even par, tied for 28th, for the tournament along with teammate Edward Loar, who shot his second straight 72. Anders Hultman shot 76 Thursday and is at 4-over-par for the tournament in 86th place.
The Cowboys' strong second round runs contrary to their recent history, OSU fell from first to second place in last year's second 18, from first to fourth in 1998, from third to 11th in 1997 and from sixth to 14th in 1996. The last time Oklahoma State made a positive move in the second round of the NCAA Championship was 1995, when OSU moved from fifth to fourth in the second round before eventually winning the national title in a playoff. The Cowboys hold the second-round lead for the first time since 1991, also a national-championship season.
In addition, OSU shot a better score in the second round than in the first for the first time since 1993, when the Cowboys shot 301 in the first round -- putting them in 21st place -- and 294 in the second, keeping alive their streak of making the second-round cut every year.
The tournament continues with the third and fourth rounds Friday and Saturday. OSU, Texas and Georgia Tech will play together in Friday's third round beginning at approximately 11 a.m.
