OPELIKA, Ala. - Charles Howell carded a 5-under-par 67 to lead Oklahoma State into third place after Wednesday's first round of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.
Howell, continuing a late-season hot streak, bogeyed Nos. 10 and 11 -- first two holes of the day -- but birdied 12 and 13 and went on to record an eagle and three other birdies to move into third place overall, two strokes strokes behind Texas' David Gossett. Howell won two of OSU's last three tournaments and now has shot 21-under-par in his last 10 rounds.
Also continuing a late-season hot streak are the Longhorns, who lost to OSU at the Big 12 Conference Championship but have since won The Maxwell and the Central Regional. Bolstered by a tournament-record score of 9-under-par from Gossett and a 7-under showing by freshman J.J. Wall, Texas carded a team score of 16-under to take an eight-stroke lead over Georgia Tech, which is second at 8-under-par 280. The Cowboys are third, one stroke behind the Yellowjackets, marking the first time since 1997 that Oklahoma State has not led the tournament after the first round.
Senior Landry Mahan, ranked fourth on the team in stroke average, carded a 2-under-par 70 to rank 13th individually overall and second among the Cowboys. One of Mahan's top career showings was his 16th-place effort at last year's NCAA tournament, when he also was second among OSU players.
Anders Hultman and Edward Loar each shot even par for the Cowboys and tied for 40th, and true freshman J.C. DeLeon shot 74 in his national-tourney debut to rank 75th among 156 individuals through 18 holes.
Oklahoma State tees off in Thursday's second round between approximately 7:30 and 8 a.m. CDT. After the second round, 15 schools will be cut from the 30-team field before the third and fourth rounds Friday and Saturday. OSU, which has never failed to miss the cut since it was established in the 1970s is making its record 54th consecutive NCAA Championship appearance and looking for its ninth national championship.
The tournament is being played on Grand National's Lake Course, a par-72, 7,003-yard course.
