STILLWATER, Okla. -- Golf World magazine has named Oklahoma State's Charles Howell as its men's Collegiate Player of the Week.
Howell's 4-under-par tournament at The Maxwell this past weekend gave him his second consecutive medalist honor and dropped his season stroke average below 70 to 69.97. The junior from Augusta, Ga., had won the Big 12 Championship last month by 10 strokes.
The Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year, Howell leads third-ranked Oklahoma State into NCAA competition this week when the Cowboys compete in the NCAA Central Regional in Victoria, Texas. The top 10 teams at the regional qualify for the NCAA Championship, to be played May 31-June 3 in Opelika, Ala. Oklahoma State has qualified for the national tournament 53 consecutive times.
Golf World selects a men's and women's collegiate player each week during the golf season. Howell and Arizona State's Miriam Nagl, a freshman who won the NCAA West Regional last week, are the magazine's honorees in the May 19 issue.
