DALLAS - Oklahoma State junior pitcher Matt Smith of Henderson, Nev., has been selected as the Phillips 66 Big 12 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week by a select panel of media covering Big 12 baseball for games played May 8-14 in the final balloting of the 2000 season.
Smith's 2000 home finale was one to remember. He pitched a five-hit complete game shutout in beating Texas Tech 2-0 and struck out 13 hitters while walking three in the process. Smith also became the all-time strikeout leader in OSU annals with 346-an average of 115.3 whiffs per season-with the
Big 12 Phillips 66 postseason tourney still upcoming. He passed Dennis Livingston with 344 strikeouts from 1982-84 for the Cowboys and started OSU on a trail of back-to-back blankings of the Red Raiders 2-0 and 5-0 last Friday and Saturday.
It was the second time this season Smith has won the award and the fourth time in his OSU career. He along with Roy York, Carl--s Gautreaux and Luke Scott received Big 12 player/pitcher of the week plaudits.
