STILLWATER, Okla. - Matt Smith struck out 13 batters and pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Oklahoma State to a 2-0 win over Texas Tech in baseball action Friday night at Reynolds Stadium.
Smith became OSU?s all-time strikeout king with 346, surpassing the old mark of 344 set by Dennis Livingston from 1981-84. He allowed only five hits while walking three to improve to 8-6 on the year. It was the Henderson, Nev., native?s 13th double digit strikeout game of his career and fourth this season. The shutout was his third in three years at OSU and first since a 12-0 win over Nebraska on April 24, 1998.
With the win the Pokes improve to 35-19 on the year and 13-12 in the Big 12 while Texas Tech drops to 32-21 and 17-11 in conference play.
Smith and Red Raider starter Blake McGinley had a scoreless pitchers dual through six innings before the Cowboys scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Carl?s Gautreaux, who was 3-for-3 at the plate, knocked a bloop double to right field and scored on a RBI single by Luke Scott to take a 1-0 lead. Curt Anthony would later follow with a double to the left-center gap that scored Scott.
McGinley dropped to 5-2 with the loss after giving up both runs off of seven hits in 7.1 innings of work.
Miles Durham led the Red Raiders with two of the team?s five hits.
With the win, OSU clinched at least a tie for sixth-place in the Big 12 standings. The teams will be back in action tomorrow at 7 p.m. Lefthander Josh Merrigan will start for the Pokes while righty Cory Metzler will throw for the Red Raiders.
