Cowboys Win Series Finale Over Nebraska, 8-2

STILLWATER, Okla. - Toby Rhodes RBI double in the fourth inning broke open a 1-1 tie as Oklahoma State defeated Nebraska 8-2 in the rubber game of the three game series.
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Luke Scott slapped a double to center field which scored Nebasett Brown to give OSU the early 1-0 advantage.
Justin Cowan tied the game for Nebraska with a solo home run in the third off of Cowboy starter Josh Merrigan. That run was the only one Merrigan allowed, as he scattered seven hits over seven innings while striking out a career-high six batters to improve to 3-1.
Following Rhodes double in the fifth, Curt Anthony chipped in with a RBI sacrifice fly to give the Pokes a 3-1 lead.
Scott belted a solo homer to right in the fifth, his fourth of the season, and the Cowboys scored four runs in the seventh to extend the lead to 8-1. Roy York and Jimbo McAuliff accounted for two of the runs off of RBI singles while the other two were results of errors by the Nebraska defense.
The Huskers scored an unearned run in the ninth off of Cowboy reliever Quenten Patterson via a RBI single by John Cole to cut the final margin to 8-2.
Nebraska starter Chad Wiles took the loss to drop to 2-1 on the season. He pitched five innings and gave up four runs off of six hits while striking out four.
Oklahoma State improved to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in Big 12 play while Nebraska fell to 7-5 and 1-2 in conference action.
Oklahoma State will be back in action Tues., Mar. 7, at 3 p.m. when Missouri Southern comes to town. Nebraska will take on Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Buck Beltzer stadium.
