Texas Sweeps Oklahoma State With 16-14 Win

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas completed the three-game sweep of Oklahoma State with a 16-14 win in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Disch-Falk Field.
Texas broke open a 6-6 ballgame with a four-run fourth inning keyed by a RBI double by designated hitter Ryan France which gave the Longhorns a 7-6 lead. Matt Rosenberg followed with a two-run single and Chris Houser knocked him in with a RBI double to extend the lead to 10-6.
OSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Nebasett Brown knocked a RBI double to leftfield and later scored on a wild pitch by Texas starter Ray Clark.
Texas scored a run in its half of the inning off a Sam Anderson RBI single to cut the lead to 2-1. The Cowboys scored four runs in the second as Roy York came up with a run scoring single and Brown later hit a double with the bases loaded clearing the bases and giving OSU a 6-1 lead.
Texas stormed back in the bottom half of the second with five runs, all of them unearned off of Cowboy starter Josh Merrigan. Texas took advantage of two OSU errors and banged out three hits in the inning to tie the game at 6-6.
UT lead 10-6 in the fifth and added three more runs to extend the lead to 13-6 before the Cowboys responded with five runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 13-11.
Jimbo McAuliff sparked the Pokes with a two-run homer to leftfield and Brown added a RBI single and Luke Scott chipped in with a two-run double in the inning.
The Longhorns responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth with run scoring singles by Jeff Ontiveros and Anderson, extending the lead to 15-11.
OSU would not die as the Pokes scored three runs in the eighth cutting the lead to 15-14. Anthony Purkiss came up with a pinch hit two-run single and later scored on a triple by Rob Watson.
Once again Texas responded with an insurance run in the eighth when Ontiveros hit a RBI double, his fourth hit of the game.
UT pitcher Kevin Frizzell picked up the win to move to 3-0 on the season while Ryan Herrmann dropped to 0-1 with the loss in relief. Charlie Thames pitched the final 2.0 innings to record his 10th save of the year.
With the sweep, Texas improves to 26-5 and 12-2 in Big 12 play while OSU dropped to 14-12 and 5-7 in conference action.
Oklahoma State will be back in action Tues., Mar. 28, at 6 p.m. against Arkansas in Fayetteville.
