OSU Wrestler Advances To NCAA Semifinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - In what began as a promising day for Oklahoma State's fourth-ranked wrestling team quickly turned as six of seven Cowboys lost in their quarterfinal matches at the Kiel Center.
Iowa State took over the lead heading into tonight's semifinals with 57 points, while Iowa and Minnesota are tied for second with 50 points. OSU fell to fourth with 44.5 points following the session three. Oklahoma is in fifth with 40 points.
Mark Mu-oz was the bright spot for the Pokes with his 5-3 tiebreaker decision over Penn State's Ross Thatcher. Mu-oz advances into tonight's semifinal match against Iowa State's fourth-ranked Zach Thompson. Thompson defeated Oklahoma's No. 5 Orville Palmer 3-2.
The first four weights OSU lost heartbreakers as Minnesota's No. 3 Leroy Vega slid past OSU sixth-ranked Jeff Ragan 8-6. At 133 pounds, OSU's No.6 Charles Walker suffered a 5-4 loss to Michigan State's No. 3 Pat McNamara.
Jamill Kelly then lost 3-2 decision to No. 4 Mark Angle of Clarion.
The most shocking loss came at 149 pounds where OSU's third-ranked Reggie Wright was decisioned 8-5 by Hofstra's No. 6 Eric Schmiesing.
At 184 pounds, Daniel Cormier suffered another surprising loss when Doug Lee came out on top of a 6-4 decision. A team point was deducted following Cormier's match due to unsportsmanlike conduct.
Dave Anderton was taken down early and never recovered as Iowa State's No. 2 Trent Hyenk won a 9-0 major decision.
Shane Roller won his first wrestleback of the morning pinning Michigan State's No. 10 Gary Maynard in 2:13. However, in his next match Illinois' Griff Powell decisioned Roller 10-6 to eliminated Roller.
Tony Gansen was the first Cowboy eliminated when Iowa's Gabe MaMahan used 12-8 decision to advance in the wrestlebacks.
Semifinals will begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight with wrestlebacks to follow.
