ST. LOUIS, Mo. - With the help of bonus points and the advancement of seven Cowboys to the quarterfinals, Oklahoma State leads the NCAA Championships with 38 points after the first day of competition at the Kiel Center in front of 15,988 fans.
"You've got to be looking for bonus points," said Oklahoma State head coach John Smith. "We had to make something happen and I think we did that. We came out and did what we had talked about - we executed."
The Cowboys lead second place Iowa by 4.5 points with Iowa State in third with 30 points and Minnesota in fourth with 28.5 points.
Jeff Ragan started the second round like he left off the first - with a pin. Ragan advanced to Friday morning's quarterfinals by pinning Jose Leon of Boston University in 4:31.
After a period with no scoring, 133-pounder Charles Walker used a flurry of back points and majored decisioned West Virginia's Bob Patnesky.
Jamill Kelly picked up a 7-4 decision over Big 12 foe Jeremy Spates of Missouri at 141 pounds. Reggie Wright was able to take Boston University's Malik Elliott down at will en route to a 20-7 major decision.
At 165 pounds, 12th-seeded Chris Martin of Virginia Tech upset OSU's No. 5 Ty Wilcox 4-3. Daniel Cormier barely missed a major decision, but cruised to a 16-9 win at 184 pounds.
No. 1 Mark Mu-oz started slowly but a takedown late in the third enabled him to score a 13-5 major decision.
At 285 pounds, Dave Anderton continued his charge for the most pins in the least time award with his second fall of the day coming in 1:01. Anderton has pinned both his opponents in just 1:29.
In the wrestlebacks, OSU's Shane Roller decisioned Duquesne's Bill Boeh 5-2, while 174-pounder Tony Gansen decisioned Duquesne's Mack Rohlay 4-2.
The Cowboys return to the mat for the quarterfinals tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the finals to follow at 6:30.
