STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State Head Football Coach Bob Simmons completed his 2000 coaching staff Wednesday by tabbing former Ohio State offensive coordinator Mike Jacobs to coach the offensive line.
Jacobs, a 29-year coaching veteran, has coached five All-American linemen, including Orlando Pace, who won the Outland and Lombardi Trophies in 1995 and 1996, and Mike Compton, a finalist for the Lombardi Trophy in 1992.
He has also coached in 13 bowl games, including the last two Sugar Bowls and the 1997 Rose Bowl.
"I have known Mike Jacobs for a long time, and he is truly one of the top coaches in the country," said Coach Simmons. "I worked with Mike at Toledo and at West Virginia. He has an incredible knowledge of the game and is proven as a coach and a recruiter."
Jacobs and OSU's head coach served on the same staffs at Toledo in 1979 and at West Virginia in the mid-1980s. Jacobs left West Virginia after the 1994 season to coach tackles and tight ends at Ohio State. He was named offensive coordinator at Ohio State prior to the 1996 Rose Bowl and has served in that capacity since.
His coaching experience also includes three years at Bowling Green coaching the offensive line and serving as head junior varsity coach. He started his coaching career at Wittenberg University in 1971, then spent two seasons at Willard High School.
Since 1987, Jacobs has been associated with 11 offenses that finished ranked in the NCAA's top 30 in rushing. Six of those teams also finished in the top 25 in total offense. Four active NFL lineman played for Jacobs, including Pace, Compton, Rick Dudley and Rich Braham.
He has been featured at clinics across the country, including North Carolina State, Georgia, West Virginia, Ohio State and Oklahoma State.
Jacobs earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wittenberg University in 1972. As a player at Wittenberg, he was a four-year letterman and member of the 1969 Division II National Championship squad. He earned a Master's of Education from Bowling Green in 1974.
