AMES, Iowa - Oklahoma State's men's indoor distance medley relay team repeated as conference champions at the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships here today. The Cowboy team finished the race in 9:45.56, beating the conference meet record of 9:47.53 it set at the indoor championships last year. The time met the 9:45.75 needed to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships in March. The win gave OSU 10 team points to put the Cowboys in seventh place at the end of the first day. Missouri leads all schools with 29 points, while Nebraska is right behind in second with 29.
Several Cowboys just missed advancing to the finals in their respective events. The top eight finishes in the heats advanced to tomorrow's finals. Mike Cliff finished ninth in the mile with a time of 4:13.65. Texas' Jeff Wood was the last runner to qualify in the race, and he finished eighth in 4:12.26. In the finals of the 5,000m race, Bruce Wright finished 10th in 14:48.52. Derek Tate was 12th with a time of 14:48.96. The meet continues tomorrow with the track events at 1 p.m. The 3,000m race is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. Chuck Sloan will try to defend his championship from last year in that race.
