Oklahoma State - UNLV Post-Game Quotes
December 02, 2000 | Cowboy Basketball
Dec. 2, 2000
OSU Coach Eddie Sutton
On the game
"I thought both teams kind of played ugly. You turn the ball over as many
times as they did and we did, it doesn't make for a game that flows. I
thought the defense was good on our part for most of the game. That was the
thing that probably allowed us to win the ball game."
On UNLV
"You have to give them a lot of credit. They fought back in the second half
and got ahead of us for the only time at 62-60. I told the squad anytime
you win and play as poorly as we did you have to be very thankful. Our
guard play, I thought, was very careless with the basketball and turned it
over too many times."
On his young team
"I'm with them everyday. I'm accustomed to it. I've seen this kind of play
before. I still think the team is going to get better and better. I
thought Andre (Williams) really gave us a big lift there in the second half
and made some big plays. It's just a game where I thought both teams seemed
like they were a little out of sync."
OKLAHOMA STATE PLAYERS
Andre Williams
On the win
"It is always good to come out on the road or away from our place and get a
win like this. We didn't play as well as we should have. We had a big lead
and we should have blown the game out. We pulled a close one out in
overtime and it is always good to help a young team.
On the team's mistakes
"We're a young team and we're going to put a lot of stress on a lot of
people. We're just out there to have fun and hopefully Coach will live long
enough to see us win.
On Kaspars Kambala
"Going into the game, we had a great scouting report from Coach Cyprien.
And our big thing was to keep him (Kambala) from scoring. We knew he could
shoot free throws and he could rebound. Every play we just wanted to seal
on him and make him feel uncomfortable, and to make him do something else
with the ball."
Victor Williams
On his free-throws that tied the game and sent the game to overtime
"I think I played a very bad game personally, and at the end of regulation I
was thinking that I let my team down in the first half. By picking those
free throws up, it helped me get going and I was able to knock them down for
the team."
On the turning point of the game
"I think the free throws helped spark us but first of all we knew that we
didn't play a very good game and that we should have been up by more at the
end of the game. Coach stressed at the end of regulation that we had to be
more aggressive defensively and we got a couple of steals and that got us
going."
On UNLV
"I think they were the best team we have played so far this year. They have
great athletes and are very quick. They played hard but we got the victory."
Fredrik Jonzen
On what the team did to shutdown Kaspars Kambala
"We have played these guys three years in a row and I think we know what
type of player he is. We doubled team him every time in the post and he
really only has one offensive move and with Andre's (Williams) help we were
able to shut him down."
On his dunk in overtime
"It's always good to get a dunk to get the crowd into the game, especially
in overtime. It was a great pass from Andre, I have to give him credit for
that."
On playing in the Myriad
"It wasn't that bad actually, it did get pretty loud in overtime. I can't
wait to get back into Gallagher, but this wasn't that bad at all."
UNLV Coach Bill Bayno
On his team
"I think our whole team could start the game. We just need to play every
game the way we played the second half. What Rebel basketball is, is playing
the way we played the second half."
On Kaspars Kambala
"I don't know what it was, but we need everybody. We need Kaspars (Kambala)
every night. We need everybody. We're not good enough not to have everybody
and have everybody playing their best basketball. They double teamed him
early, and he had turnovers. I think he lost some confidence because of
that. It took his aggressiveness away."
UNLV PLAYERS
Trevor Diggs
On the game
"I thought Oklahoma State was a good team. They really have guys inside that
can score and some guys outside that can score. In the first half I though
we really didn't come out to play. You can't take 10 minutes off against a
team like Oklahoma State, especially with the energy from the crowd. In the
second half we came out and played some defense, but we just came up short."
