Postgame Notes
The game was delayed 35 minutes after Jason Keep's backboard-shattering dunk with 43.9 seconds remaining. Keep and UALR's Darius Eason hung on the rim after Keep broke away for a dunk that gave OSU a 68-58 lead. Falling glass from the backboard caused Eason to need eight stiches to close a cut on his left elbow.
Veteran scribes and staffers at OSU cannot remember a backboard shattering during a game, but several memorable glass-breakers have occurred in the past few years. Desmond Mason broke a backboard during the 1996 Basketball Bash, and Bryant Reeves had two in his senior year -- once in practice during the fall and once in Seattle during practice for the Final Four. Keep's six points came during the last six minutes of the game, four coming on breakaway dunks.
OSU improved to 60-3 all-time in Gallagher-Iba Arena openers and has won its last 26 home lid-lifters. Tonight's game equals the latest home opener in school history, the 1933-34 team also played its first home game on Dec. 19.
Fredrik Jonzen scored a career-high 22 points. He scored 19, then a career high, in last year's game at UALR.
Maurice Baker has hit at least one three-pointer in every game.
OSU was playing the first game in its new Gallagher-Iba Arena, a part of the $56 million OSU Athletics Center. Needless to say, the capacity attendance of 13,611 is a school record.
UALR's Alan Barksdale hit his 200th three-pointer tonight, setting the school's career record. Malik Dixon held the previous mark with 199.
Dunks: Keep 2, Jonzen 1, A.Williams 1
