NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma State's top-ranked wrestling team received a scare from sixth-ranked Oklahoma, but survived for a 22-13 win in the first Bedlam match of the year on Sunday at the Lloyd Noble Center in front of 2,281 fans.
John Smith's Cowboys improve to 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Big 12, while OU fell to 1-1.
OSU's Daniel Cormier provided the fuel OSU needed at 184 pounds. Cormier collected a pair of three near-fall points in the first period in a 14-1 major decision that increased the Cowboy lead to 16-10.
All-American and No. 2-ranked Mark Mu-oz lengthened the OSU lead to 19-10 with a 3-2 decision over Oklahoma's Waymon May. Mu-oz countered a May shot with a takedown with 18 seconds remaining in the match for a 3-2 win.
OSU cemented the match at 125 pounds, where underdog Matt Brown upset ninth-ranked Bo Maynes 3-2 in the last match of the afternoon.
At 149 pounds, fourth-ranked Reggie Wright took care of OU's seventh-ranked Jared Frayer 6-1 to give OSU an early 6-4 advantage.
Third-ranked 133-pounder Charles Walker opened Bedlam with a 4-1 decision of OU's 10th-ranked Witt Durden. The Pokes also picked up a injury default at 157 pounds where the Sooners' Mark Worthy tore his ACL with OSU's Shane Roller leading 4-2.
The Cowboys return to action next Sunday, traveling to San Luis Obispo, Calif., and Fresno, Calif., for a double dip with Cal Poly and Fresno State. The Cowboys face off with Cal Poly at noon and Fresno State at 7 p.m.
