SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The first half of a wrestling doubleheader went the way of the Oklahoma State Cowboys 36-3 on Sunday afternoon in San Luis Obispo, Calif., against the Cal Poly Mustangs.
The top-ranked Cowboys improve to 4-0 on the season headed into tonight's showdown with 21st-ranked Fresno State in Fresno, Calif. Cal Poly falls to 0-1 on the season.
The marquee matchup pitted OSU's third-ranked 149-pounder Reggie Wright against Cal Poly's No. 12 Cedric Waymon. Wright broke out early with three first-period takedowns and never looked back, winning an 8-2 decision.
At 174-pounds, struggling redshirt freshman Tyrone Lewis broke out with a pin in 3:24. Daniel Cormier followed that up with another pin at 3:55 to give the Cowboys a 33-3 lead.
Third-ranked Charles Walker started the landslide with a 17-1 technical fall over Cal Poly's 133-pounder Matt Hendren. The win gave the Cowboys a 8-3 lead they wouldn't relinquish.
At 165 pounds, OSU's Ty Wilcox showed his best offense of the season, winning a 17-3 major decision.
Cal Poly broke on top in the opening match when heavyweight Dan Leahy escaped with two seconds remaining in the tiebreaker, giving the Mustangs an early 3-0 lead.
Matt Brown tied it up 3-3 for the Pokes at 125 pounds with a 4-3 decision of Jamie Garza.
OSU also picked up decisions at 141 and 157 pounds from Jerrod Sanders and Shane Roller, respectively.
