STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State's two top women harriers will compete in the 2000 NCAA Women's Cross Country Championships on Monday at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa.
Senior Sara Wells and Sophomore Alexandra Lindquist are the lone members of the OSU women's cross team to travel to Ames to compete. The remainder of the women's squad ended the season last weekend with a seventh place overall finish at the 2000 NCAA Midwest Regional meet in Waterloo, Iowa. In order for the whole team to qualify to compete at nationals, a second place finish was necessary.
However, Wells' fifth place individual finish and Lindquist's sixth place finish made them eligible to compete for the individual title in the women's 6K race, which is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
This will be the first time that Wells has competed in the national championship race for OSU. In 1999, she transferred to OSU from Colby Community College where she was an junior college All-American in cross country and in track. This season, Wells captured two individual meet titles and a Big 12 Runner of the Week award.
Lindquist was a member of the OSU women's team that finished 20th at the national championship meet in 1998. After a fifth place finish at the 1998 Big 12 Championship meet, she was named the Big 12's Newcomer of the Year. She has made a remarkable come back this season, after sitting out during the 1999 season due to stress fractures in her feet.
Wells and Lindquist will represent the Big 12 at Monday's meet along with four other women's teams from the conference.
