STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State quarterback Tony Lindsay will miss the rest of the 2000 football campaign due to an injury to his throwing shoulder, head coach Bob Simmons announced at the football media luncheon today.
Lindsay, a four-year starter at quarterback, injured his right (throwing) shoulder in the Cowboys preseason scrimmage on Aug. 26, and had been playing with pain through the first five games of the year.
Coach Simmons made the following statement to the media at the press luncheon:
"Tony has been in quite a bit of pain throughout the season. A specialist looked at an x-ray and found a torn muscle back in his shoulder which will require surgery, ending his football career at OSU. Tony wanted to try to play, even today, but after he talked with his folks, they thought that immediate surgery would try to alleviate some of the pain he was having. That was hard for him because he said that he wanted to try to continue to help the team, but he did not feel like he was helping the team in the state that he was physically."
Lindsay ends his tenure at OSU with his name scattered throughout the OSU record book in several offensive categories. He moved past Ton? Jones into second place on the Cowboys career total offense list (5,355 yards) in last Saturday's loss to Missouri. He was the Big 12 Freshman of the Year in 1997 after helping lead Oklahoma State to an 8-4 record and an Alamo Bowl berth.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Aso Pogi will move into the starting quarterback position while sophomore Ryan Bivin will inherit the backup spot.
Pogi has played in four games this season and is 24-for-49 for 271 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
