STILLWATER, Okla. -- The Cowboy football team isn't the only Oklahoma State team that will be having a conference match-up in Boulder, Colo., this weekend.
Three and a half hours before kickoff of the football game, the OSU women's cross country team will be competing in the 2000 Big 12 Cross Country Championships. The 6K, 11:30 a.m. race will be at Buffalo Ranch on the University of Colorado's South Campus.
Only half of the 18-women cross country team will be traveling to Boulder to compete for the Cowgirls. Seniors Sara Wells and Araceli Davila, Sophomores Alexandra Lindquist and Shavon Young, and Freshmen Marie Nilsson, Joanna Fedick, Ami Butler, Catherine Clifford and Sharalee Sparks will represent OSU Saturday morning.
"This is a young team," said Catrina Acosta, head coach. "I only have two seniors on the team. It is going to be very interesting to see what happens."
Even with five freshmen, OSU does not go into the Big 12 Championships inexperienced. So far this season, the team has won two team titles, and garnered a second place finish at the Sept. 30 Cowboy Jamboree.
Senior Sara Wells has two individual titles this season, and a Big 12 Runner of the Week award. Two weeks ago, at the Pre-National meet in Ames, Iowa, she finished 12th with a time of 21:31.9 in the 6K.
Sophomore Alexandra Lindquist is a well known figure to the Big 12 Championships. Although she had to sit out last season due to stress fractures in her feet, her fifth place finish at the 1998 Big 12 Championships gave her recognition as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year.
"I think the girls are confident that they are going to finish in the top half of the Big 12. There is nothing bigger than the Pre-National meet that we just went to. After that experience, I think that we are ready to go out and achieve our goals," Acosta said.
