Postmatch Quotes
vs. Iowa State
Jan. 28, 2000
OSU Coach John Smith
On the match
"They're a tough team, a good team, a solid team. They come together as a team. They're wrestling as a team. Congratulations to Coach (Bobby) Douglas on where they're at right now.
"We obviously have to get better. Not so much better technically. Not so much better with our skills. We have to get tougher mentally. We have to get tougher conditionally. We just have a lot of areas we need to improve on. I can't understand how five days later they look so different as a team. So I have to analyze that and figure it out. We didn't wrestle well at all. At the same time, they made us look bad.
"There's a lot of work to be done. This is a squad, from the beginning I've said it all along, that anytime it shows a lack of focus we're in trouble. We don't have any luxury to do anything. We can't compensate with a couple individuals to overcome a loss or overcome our overall performance. If we show a lack of focus for the rest of the season, we'll continue to get beat. It's that simple. We have no room. We didn't have anything really tonight."
"It must get better. The areas we need to get better on are not so much technical. We have to show a little more guts out there and make sure we regroup and refocus and get prepared for next weekend."
Iowa State coach Bobby Douglas
On the victory
"This is a great victory for us. It came at a great time, Oklahoma State
wrestled a hard match. I think we wrestled very well tonight. I was pleased
with our performance. My hat is off to this
team. This is the first time they have wrestled as a team, not individuals."
On the Sanderson brothers' performances
I think Cael (Sanderson) set the tone for us with his aggressiveness. He was
so dominant, I think that fires a lot of guys up. Cole (Sanderson) wrestled
a tremendous match."
On his team
"We are getting better, we are working at it. We have got some guys who will
go out there and fight you. The guys we had before would go out and fight
you. We were just short on talent. These guys are talented. We came to
wrestle as hard as we could."
Iowa State Wrestler Cael Sanderson
On wrestling Daniel Cormier
"I knew it was going to be tough because he is a dangerous wrestler. I just
tried to be the aggressor. That is our style, we were trying to get them
tired. He is a tough kid though.
On being compared to OSU's Pat Smith
"Pat Smith has been one of my heroes and he still is. He is just a great
wrestler and I liked watching him wrestle. To put me in that class is kind
of crazy, I still have a lot yet to do.
On dominating in college
"I didn't expect anything near how I have been performing. I can't really
explain it. I wasn't anywhere near this in high school. I have combined my
style with Coach Douglas' and it has really helped me out"
