BACK-TO-BACK -- Oklahoma State is opening a season with back-to-back home games for just the second time in the last 18 years. The Cowboys last opened with two straight on Lewis Field in 1988 when the Pokes defeated Miami of Ohio and Texas A&M. Prior to 1988, you have to go back to 1981 when OSU defeated Tulsa (23-21) and lost to San Diego State (23-16) to find at least two home games at the front end of the schedule.
KICKOFF/TICKETS -- Kickoff for Saturday's OSU-TU encounter is set for just after 11:30 a.m. The late-morning start is due to the game being televised live as the Big 12 Syndicated Game of the Week. Tickets for the OSU-Tulsa game are still available at the Athletics Ticket Office in Stillwater or by calling (877) 255-4678. A crowd in excess of 42,000 is expected for Saturday's game.
RECORDS/RANKINGS -- Oklahoma State heads into the second week of the season with a record of 1-0. The Cowboys opened their season on Lewis Field Saturday night with a 24-7 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Golden Hurricane will come to Stillwater with an identical 1-0 record. TU opened its season in Tulsa last week with a 45-21 win over Southwest Missouri State. Neither team is ranked in Top 25 polls, but Oklahoma State continues to receive votes.
ORANGE PEEL -- It's Orange Peel week at OSU, and a record crowd is expected for this year's performance that features Sinbad and country sensation Faith Hill. Orange Peel is scheduled for Friday night on Lewis Field. Tickets for the event are still available at the Orange Peel office at (405) 744-8393. Orange Peel is in its fourth year at OSU. The student-produced event has featured entertainers such as Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy and Randy Travis.
OTHER SPECIAL EVENTS -- In addition to Orange Peel weekend, there is a lot happening in conjunction with this week's game against Tulsa. It's FCA Day at OSU, and several thousand representing that group will be on hand. It's also Orange Power Shirt Day, and OSU will host a celebrity softball classic beginning at approximately 3:30 p.m. at Reynolds Stadium.
ON RADIO -- Saturday's game between OSU and Tulsa will be broadcast live on both radio and television. The radio broadcast will be on the Cowboy Network and will be heard on 29 stations ranging from Guymon in the panhandle to Idabel in the southeast. Bill Teegins, Sports Director at Oklahoma City's KWTV, is in his ninth season as the radio voice of OSU Football. He is again joined in the booth by Tom Dirato, OSU's Coordinator of Radio and Television.
ON TELEVISION -- Saturday's game will be televised as part of the Big 12 syndicated package. Drew Goodman and Keith Jackson will be behind the microphones. It will be the first televised game of the 1999 season but the 10th time in the last 17 outings the Pokes have been on the tube.
OSU LAST WEEK -- Oklahoma State successfully opened the season with a 24-7 win over Louisiana-Lafayette. O-State rode to a 24-0 lead and appeared on the verge of pitching a shutout before the Ragin' Cajuns scored with 5:46 to play on a seven-yard interception return. OSU's defense was solid, if not better. The Pokes held UL to 61 total yards, including just 14 net rushing yards. Eight different OSU defenders registered tackles behind the line of scrimmage, including juco transfer Juqua Thomas, who had three tackles for minus 18 yards. On the offensive side of the ball, tailback Jamaal Fobbs had 97 yards on just nine carries, including a 68-yard touchdown run at the 10:25 mark of the fourth quarter. Nathan Simmons started at tailback and appeared to be full strength after major knee surgery last December. Simmons carried the ball 11 times for 40 yards and scored the Cowboys' first touchdown of the season with 6:50 remaining in the first quarter.
TULSA LAST WEEK -- While OSU was opening with a win in Stillwater, Tulsa was dismantling Southwest Missouri State by a 45-21 margin at Skelly Stadium. The Golden Hurricane inflicted damage on the ground and through the air. Tulsa passed for 228 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 331 yards and three more touchdowns. The Golden Hurricane led by just two, 16-14, at the half but exploded for 22 points in the third quarter and added another touchdown in the final period. John Mosley was Tulsa's leading rusher with 161 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Michael Wall had a sensational night, completing 14 of 15 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman quarterback Josh Blankenship added 53 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate action. Defensively, TU limited the Bears to 130 rushing yards and 166 passing yards.
STREAK ON THE LINE -- Oklahoma State will put its 15-game Lewis Field winning streak against non-conference opposition on the line this week when the Cowboys entertain the Golden Hurricane The Cowboys have not lost a non-conference game on Lewis Field since 1991. Below is the complete streak.
Year Opponent Score 1999 Louisiana-Lafayette 24-7 1998 Louisiana-Lafayette 44-20 1998 Mississippi State 42-23 1997 Northeast Louisiana 38-7 1997 Fresno State 35-0 1996 Utah State 31-17 1996 Tulsa 30-9 1996 Southwest Missouri St. (OT) 23-20 1995 Southwest Missouri St. 35-7 1994 North Texas 36-34 1994 Tulsa 17-10 1993 TCU 27-22 1993 Southwest Missouri St. 45-7 1992 Tulsa 24-19 1992 Indiana State 35-3
HERE IT IS AGAIN -- It's a road-weary note but one that merits another look. Oklahoma State has usually been able to use the Tulsa game as a barometer for the rest of its season. Since 1944, only two OSU teams have lost to Tulsa and finished the season with a winning record. The other 11 times the Cowboys have lost to Tulsa since '44, OSU has finished the season below .500.
THE MEANINGLESS NOTE OF THE WEEK -- Oklahoma State is 3-1-2 against Tulsa in games played in the final year of a decade. OSU's victories have come in 1929, 1939 and 1959. The ties occurred in 1919 and 1949. The lone loss came in 1989 in Tulsa by a 20-10 score.
HEAD COACH BOB SIMMONS -- Oklahoma State's head football coach is one game into his fifth season and will be coaching his 48th OSU game when Tulsa comes to town this week. Coach Simmons, who has guided the Cowboys to winning seasons in two of the last three seasons, will bring a career mark of 23-24 into Saturday night's game. Since the 10th game of his initial OSU season, however, the Cowboys under Simmons have won 21 of 38. Simmons came to Oklahoma State from Colorado, where he was assistant head coach for Bill McCartney. He guided OSU to a bowl game just three years into his tenure and was the 1997 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year.
MILESTONES UNDER SIMMONS -- Oklahoma State's football fortunes have soared since Simmons became the school's 20th head coach on Dec. 4, 1994. Below are just a few of those milestones.
- OSU registered its first win under Coach Simmons on September 16, 1995,
when the Cowboys upended Southwest Missouri State 35-7 on Lewis Field.
- When Simmons led the Cowboys to a 30-26 win over Missouri at Columbia on
Oct. 21, 1995, it snapped a 20-game winless streak in conference play.
- Two weeks after defeating Missouri at Columbia, the Cowboys defeated
Oklahoma at Norman. It was OSU's first win over its in-state rival since
1976 and was a signal of things to come. O-State has defeated Oklahoma three
of the four years since Simmons became head coach.
- When Oklahoma State won at Iowa State in the 1997 season opener, it would
be the start of a six-game winning streak and would help guide the Cowboys
to their first bowl season since 1988. OSU would win its first six games of
the season, including back-to-back wins over Texas and Colorado.
- Since overtime became vogue in college football in 1996, Oklahoma State
has had more than its share of extra-period contests. Under Simmons, the
Cowboys have gone into overtime four times, including a two-overtime
thriller at Texas A&M two years ago.
- Since Bob Simmons took over the OSU reins in 1995, the Cowboys have faced
15 teams that were nationally ranked going into the game. Six of those
opponents were ranked in the top 10 whey they faced Oklahoma State. In the
last two seasons, Oklahoma State has defeated three opponents (Texas,
Colorado and Mississippi State) that were nationally ranked.
- Under Bob Simmons, Oklahoma State is 9-0 against non-conference
competition on Lewis Field and 11-5 vs. non-league opposition overall.
- When the Cowboys face Tulsa Saturday night, they will be looking for their fourth straight win dating back to the final two games of the 1998 season. That would be the second-longest winning streak of the last four years. OSU won six straight to open the 1997 season.

Noting the Cowboys
OSU LINEBACKERS SHINE IN OPENING-NIGHT WIN -- Oklahoma State's Tarrell Knauls and Kenyatta Wright, who are both on the preseason watch list for the Dick Butkus Award, joined the rest of the linebacker corps in an outstanding performance in the season opener. Knauls led the defense with seven tackles. Jack Golden had six tackles and a tackle for loss. Wright and Knauls are among seven Big 12 Conference linebackers on the list. Knauls is a senior from Tulsa (Washington) and had 59 tackles and five sacks a year ago. Wright, a senior from Vian, had 71 tackles and five sacks last season. Both have had outstanding OSU careers, and their numbers are listed below.

GOLDEN RETURN IMPRESSIVE -- Linebacker Jack Golden saw his first action in a Cowboy game uniform since the final game of the 1997 season, and his return was successful. From the press box, he was credited with four unassisted tackles and two assists. In addition, he had one tackle for minus three yards.
NATHAN COMES BACK, LOOKS FOR 2,000 -- Tailback Nathan Simmons spent the summer of 1999 going through a vigorous rehab program for major knee surgery last December. Saturday night against Louisiana-Lafayette, Simmons made that comeback complete. He rushed for 40 yards on 11 carries and scored a touchdown. One game into his final OSU season, Simmons is on the verge of becoming the 13th player in Oklahoma State history to rush for 2,000 or more career yards. The son of head coach Bob Simmons, he now has 1,745 career yards, just 255 yards shy of the 2,000 mark. He is 17th on the all-time OSU rushing list, 95 yards behind Jim Dillard and 16th place.

COWBOY QB SIDELINED -- OSU quarterback Tony Lindsay suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the season opener Saturday night. The full extent of Lindsay's injury was unknown as of Sunday afternoon, but an MRI was scheduled, and more should be known later in the week. Lindsay began the season as OSU's No. 5 all-time passer and is No. 7 on the career total offense chart. Each of his first two Oklahoma State seasons have ranked in the school's top 20 single-season performances. In 1997, Lindsay passed for 1,442 yards, the 11th-best single-season effort. Last season, the Denver Thomas Jefferson product passed for 1,172 yards, the 20th-best single-season performance by a Cowboy quarterback. Lindsay had the second-most passing yards ever by a Cowboy freshman in 1997 and the third-most passing yards by an OSU sophomore a year ago.

SYDNES' SCORING -- Senior kicker Tim Sydnes began the season sixth on the career scoring list and began to add to those totals Saturday night against Louisiana-Lafayette. Against UL, Sydnes converted on all three extra-point tries and added a 29-yard field goal. Through three-plus seasons, Sydnes has scored 213 points and trails No. 5 Thurman Thomas by 53 points. He is already the third-most-prolific kick scorer in school history, trailing only Cary Blanchard and Larry Roach.

ANOTHER BIG NIGHT FOR ETHAN -- Wide receiver Ethan Howell had another big night for OSU catching the ball. The Monroe, La., senior had two catches for 76 yards against Louisiana-Lafayette and was once again a big-play provider: One of his catches in the opener was a 63-yard touchdown pass from B.J. Tiger. Howell is picking up where he left off a year ago. He didn't catch a pass in OSU's 1998 season finale against Baylor, but in the two games prior to that (Texas and UL), he had four catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. That's three touchdowns in his last four games, and all four touchdown receptions in his career have covered 55 yards or more.
A RIVERS RUNS THROUGH IT -- H-Back Marcellus Rivers had three receptions for 30 yards in OSU's season-opening win over Louisiana-Lafayette. Rivers has now caught three passes in four straight games, dating back to the Texas game in Austin last season. Over those four games, Rivers has 12 receptions for 217 yards. That's 54 yards per game and more than 18 yards per reception over his last four games.
GETTING HIS WINGS -- When true freshman Ben Bowling took his first snap late in the fourth quarter Saturday night, he became the first true freshman quarterback to see playing time since Tone Jones in 1993. Both Tony Lindsay and former OSU quarterback Chris Chaloupka saw their first action as redshirt freshmen.

RICHARDSON A REAL THREAT -- Senior receiver Terance Richardson is not only a threat catching the football but as a punt returner. Richardson did not catch a pass in the season opener, but he did return eight punts for 99 yards. His opening-night average was 12.4 yards per return. Last year, Richardson had 28 returns for 313 yards and an average of 11.1 per return.
DEEE-FENSE -- OSU's defense, one of the nation's best at stopping the run over the past two years, stopped almost everything in Saturday's victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. The Cowboys held the Ragin' Cajuns without an offensive touchdown and allowed just 61 yards total offense, the second-lowest amount ever by an OSU opponent. The school-record total-defense performance came in 1947, when OSU held Kansas State to 29 yards. The best mark in the last half-century was a 71-yard effort Oct. 3, 1981, at North Texas State. UL Lafayette managed just 14 net yards rushing, the 11th-lowest total in OSU opponent history and the lowest mark since Fresno State was held to 20 net yards lost in OSU's last shutout victory, a 35-0 decision Sept. 13, 1997.
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS AT HOME -- After Saturday's victory over Southwestern Louisiana, OSU has won 15 straight nonconference games on Lewis Field. The last OSU home loss to a nonleague opponent was Sept. 21, 1991, when the Cowboys fell 24-21 to TCU. In the 1990s, OSU is 17-2 in nonconference home games.
CLOSURE ON OPENERS -- OSU is now 57-36-5 on opening day and 65-28-5 in home openers. The Cowboys have won seven of their last eight season openers and seven of their last eight home openers as well.
This Week's Opponent
TURNPIKE TILT ON TAP AGAIN -- Oklahoma State and Tulsa will square off for the 68th time when this week's game kicks off Saturday. The teams have met 17 times in the last 18 years including last year's 35-20 TU victory at Skelly Stadium, and the rivals are scheduled to play each other in Tulsa again in 2000.
THE SERIES -- Despite last year's loss in Tulsa, OSU leads the overall series 35-27-5. The Cowboys have won 14 of the last 21 meetings between the schools and have come out on top 17 consecutive times in Stillwater meetings. The Golden Hurricane's last victory on Lewis Field was a 35-7 triumph in 1951. In fact, the home team has won 12 of the last 13 meetings between the schools.
EXPECT A CLOSE ONE -- In the last meeting in Stillwater, David Thompson rushed for 252 yards to lead the Cowboys to a 30-9 victory in 1996, and last year, Tulsa raced out to a 35-0 lead to send OSU to its first loss. However, in every other meeting this decade between these teams, the game has been decided by a touchdown or less. In 1995, in Bob Simmons' second game as OSU's coach, TU scored 21 unanswered points in the final 10 minutes to win 24-23. In the previous three seasons, OSU had won by snuffing potential game-tying or -winning Tulsa drives in Cowboy territory in the game's final minute, and in two of those games, the Golden Hurricane saw possible touchdown passes fall just incomplete on the games' final plays. Here's a look at the Cimarron series in the 1990s:
Year Date Site Result 1990 Sept. 1 Stillwater W 10-3 1991 Sept. 7 Tulsa L 7-13 1992 Sept. 26 Stillwater W 24-19 1993 Sept. 18 Tulsa W 16-10 1994 Sept. 24 Stillwater W 17-10 1995 Sept. 9 Tulsa L 23-24 1996 Sept. 14 Stillwater W 30-9 1998 Sept. 12 Tulsa L 20-35
HISTORY TALKS -- Through the years, Oklahoma State's game against Tulsa has been a fairly good barometer of how the season would go for the Cowboys. The Cowboys have finished with winning records in only five of the 27 years that OSU has lost to Tulsa. Since the series resumed in 1982, OSU has lost to Tulsa five times, and the Cowboys' combined record in those five seasons is 18-35-3, conversely, OSU is 65-50-2 since 1982 in years when it defeats the Hurricane.
A LOOK AT THE HURRICANE -- Tulsa opened its 1999 season Saturday in strong fashion, running off 22 unanswered points in the third quarter en route to a 45-21 victory over Southwest Missouri State. John Mosley, who scored TU's final touchdown in last year's OSU game, rushed 22 times for 161 yards and a touchdown to lead a Hurricane attack that racked up over 500 yards total offense while holding the Bears under 300 yards for the game. Quarterback Michael Wall completed 14 of 15 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown.

COACH DAVE RADER -- Saturday's victory over Southwest Missouri State kicked off Dave Rader's 12th year as Tulsa's football coach. He became TU's head coach in 1998 after working one season as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Prior to joining Tulsa's staff, he spent three seasons at Alabama and one season as offensive coordinator at Mississippi State. Rader played at Tulsa and was the Golden Hurricane's starting quarterback in 1977 and '78. As Tulsa's starting QB, Rader was 0-1 against OSU, losing 34-17 in Tulsa in 1977.
THE OSU-TULSA CONNECTION -- OSU offensive coordinator Ron Calcagni came to OSU from TU, where he coached both quarterbacks and receivers. OSU assistant Calvin Miller also spent time on the staff at Tulsa, coaching All-American Dennis Byrd. Several OSU players hail from the Tulsa area: Ben Bowling and Chris Gray attended Jenks High School, Tarrell Knauls and B.J. Tiger went to Booker T. Washington HS, Jake Riffe and Joey Webb attended Charles Page HS in Sand Springs, Brent Black wood attended Union HS, and Brent Marley, a Broken Arrow native, went to Coweta HS. OSU's current No. 2 quarterback, Ben Bowling, led his Jenks team to the 6A state championship last year as the Trojans earned a title-game triumph over Union, which was piloted by TU's current No. 2 quarterback, Josh Blankenship.
SERIES NOTES -- Saturday's game will mark the first time in 15 meetings that OSU and Tulsa have played a daytime contest. The last 14 meetings have been under the lights, the last afternoon battle between the Cowboys and Golden Hurricane was Oct. 1, 1983, in Stillwater, when the Cowboys posted a 9-0 shutout victory ... In the 67-year history of the OSU-Tulsa series, there have been 18 shutouts and two scoreless ties ... OSU's largest margin of victory over Tulsa was 39 points (41-2) in 1917, TU's largest margin of victory in the series was 49 points (55-6) in 1943.
